Marcus Armstrong is een Nieuw-Zeelandse coureur, die in 2023 zijn IndyCar debuut maakte voor Chip Ganassi Racing.

Weg naar de IndyCar Series

Om tot dit punt te komen, won Armstrong op jonge leeftijd een groot aantal kartkampioenschappen. In 2014 maakte hij op 13-jarige leeftijd zijn autosport-debuut in een Nieuw-Zeelandse GT-klasse rijdende met Toyota 86 wagens. Na enkele uitingen in de Nieuw-Zeelandse Formule Ford, maakte hij in 2016 de overstap naar Europa.

Na enkele uitingen in de Formule 3 en Formule Renault, reed Armstong in 2017 zijn eerste Europese autosportseizoen in de Italiaanse Formule 4 en won direct het kampioenschap. Dat jaar eindigde hij tevens als tweede in het Duitse Formule 4 kampioenschap.

In 2018 en 2019 volgden twee seizoenen in het FIA Formule 3 kampioenschap, met een vijfde en tweede plaats in het algemene klassement als resultaat. Van 2020 tot 2022 volgden drie seizoenen in de Formule 2, waar hij ondanks in totaal vier overwinningen elk seizoen als dertiende besloot.

Ondanks parttime eerste IndyCar seizoen, toch Rookie of the Year

In 2023 maakte Armstrong de overstap naar de IndyCar Series, waar hij in een wagen van Chip Ganassi Racing alle races op permanente- en stratencircuits voor zijn rekening neemt. Ondanks dat hij geen ovalraces reed, werd hij dat jaar toch Rookie of the Year.

Eerste fulltime IndyCar seizoen

Na voldoende indruk te hebben gemaakt tijdens zijn eerste IndyCar seizoen, mocht Armstrong in 2024 voor het eerst een volledig seizoen rijden. Nog steeds rijdende voor Chip Ganassi Racing, finishte de Nieuw-Zeelander in acht van de zeventien races in de top tien, waaronder een derde plaats in Detroit, en eindigde als veertiende in het kampioenschap. Door de invoering van het Charter-Programma was Chip Ganassi Racing genoodzaakt om van vijf wagens terug te schalen naar drie, waardoor Armstrong zijn stoeltje bij het topteam verloor.

Nieuwe start bij Meyer Shank Racing

Na het verliezen van zijn stoeltje bij Chip Ganassi Racing, zou Armstrong niet lang werkloos blijven. De uit Christchurch afkomstige coureur werd enkele dagen na afloop van het 2024 IndyCar Series seizoen bevestigd als tweede coureur bij Meyer Shank Racing, dat vanaf 2025 een technische samenwerking heeft met Chip Ganassi Racing. Zo bleef Armstrong toch nog verbonden met Ganassi.

Ondanks zijn beperkte ervaring slaagde Armstrong erin om tijdens zijn eerste seizoen bij Meyer Shank Racing direct indruk te maken. In elf van de zeventien races finishte hij in de top tien, inclusief een knappe derde plaats op de Iowa Speedway. Armstrong wist het zijn meer ervaren teamgenoot Felix Rosenqvist regelmatig lastig te maken en eindigde vlak achter hem als achtste in het kampioenschap.
