Callum Ilott

Callum Ilott is een Engelse IndyCar Series coureur, welke in 2021 zijn IndyCar debuut maakte bij Juncos Hollinger Racing. In 2025 is hij één van twee fulltime coureurs bij Prema Racing.

De start van Ilott's autosportcarrière

Callum Ilott was na zeven jaar actief te zijn geweest in de karting sinds 2015 te bewonderen binnen de autosportpaddock in meerdere open-wheel klassen. De coureur uit Cambridge begon zijn autosportavontuur sterk na een lange en succesvolle kartcarrière. In zijn eerste jaar in het Europees Formule 3-kampioenschap veroverde hij meteen een podiumplek. In 2016 deed Ilott er in dezelfde klasse nog een schepje bovenop door zelfs twee races te winnen namens het Nederlandse Van Amersfoort Racing.

Doorbraak in de Formule 3

In 2017 wist de snelle coureur uit Engeland in dezelfde klasse, ditmaal rijdend voor het Prema Powerteam, zes races te winnen. Hij eindigde het seizoen als vierde in het klassement. Dit sterke Europees Formule 3-seizoen zorgde ervoor dat Ilott later dat jaar al aan twee wedstrijden binnen het FIA Formule 2-kampioenschap mocht deelnemen namens Trident. In 2018 maakte Callum Ilott echter niet de voltijd overstap naar de hoogste opstapklasse richting de Formule 1. Hij kwam dat jaar uit voor ART Grand Prix in de GP3 Series, waarin hij met twee overwinningen als derde in het klassement eindigde.

Overstap naar de Formule 2

Een jaar later, in 2019, maakte Ilott na een succesvol seizoen in de GP3 Series de overstap naar de Formule 2. Hier reed hij voor het Sauber Junior Team by Charouz. Ilott sloot zijn eerste seizoen in deze klasse af als elfde in het kampioenschap. Zijn beste resultaten waren twee derde plaatsen, behaald op de circuits van Catalunya en Sochi. Dat jaar maakte hij ook zijn Formule 1-debuut als testrijder bij Alfa Romeo.

In 2020 beleefde Ilott een zeer sterk tweede seizoen in de Formule 2. Hij greep echter nipt naast de titel en moest zich namens UNI-Virtuosi Racing tevredenstellen met een tweede plaats in het kampioenschap. Het talent uit Cambridge won dat seizoen drie races, op de Red Bull Ring, Silverstone en Monza. Naast zijn Formule 2-campagne was Ilott ook actief als testrijder voor zowel Alfa Romeo Racing als het Haas F1 Team. Tijdens de Grand Prix van de Eifel op de Nürburgring stond Ilott op het punt zijn eerste vrije training in de Formule 1 te rijden namens Haas, maar deze sessie werd geannuleerd door slecht weer.

Kennismaking met de IndyCar Series in 2021

In 2021 was Callum Ilott actief als testrijder binnen de Formule 1 voor Ferrari en Alfa Romeo Racing. Daarnaast reed hij dat jaar in de GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup namens Iron Lynx. Naast zijn verplichtingen in de Formule 1 en SportsCars maakte Ilott dat jaar ook zijn debuut in de NTT IndyCar Series. Hij reed op Portland International Raceway namens Juncos Hollinger Racing.

Naast de wedstrijd in Portland kwam Ilott ook in actie tijdens de laatste twee IndyCar-races van het seizoen, op WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca en het stratencircuit van Long Beach.

Volledige IndyCar-seizoenen

In 2022 en 2023 reed Ilott twee volledige seizoenen bij Juncos Hollinger Racing. Zijn beste resultaat was tweemaal een vijfde plaats in 2023. Hoewel hij soms sterke prestaties liet zien, besloot Juncos hem voor 2024 te vervangen door Romain Grosjean.

Ilott slaagde er niet in om een fulltime IndyCar-stoeltje te bemachtigen, maar kreeg wel de kans om enkele races voor McLaren te rijden. Dit combineerde hij met een seizoen in het World Endurance Championship, waarin hij met een Porsche 963 als zevende in het kampioenschap eindigde.

Terugkeer naar de IndyCar Series

Dankzij zijn ervaring in de IndyCar Series tekende Ilott voor 2025 een contract bij Prema Racing. Hiermee keerde hij fulltime terug in de IndyCar Series. Het seizoen kende echter een moeizame start; pas in zijn dertiende race finishte de Brit voor het eerst in de top tien. Dit bleek echter het startschot van een sterk slot van het seizoen, waarin hij in vier van de laatste vijf races in de top tien eindigde, met zesde plaatsen op Laguna Seca en Portland als beste klasseringen.

Ilott heeft een doorlopend contract en zal ook in 2026 voor Prema rijden.
