Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin begon zijn carrière, net als veel andere coureurs, in de karting. Al snel maakte hij de overstap naar de toerwagens, wat de Nieuw-Zeelander geen windeieren legde. In 2012, op 19-jarige leeftijd, won McLaughlin in Australië zowel het V8 SuperTourers-kampioenschap als de Dunlop V8 Supercar Series.

In datzelfde jaar maakte McLaughlin zijn debuut in het bekende en zeer competitieve Virgin Australia Supercars-kampioenschap, waar hij enkele wedstrijden reed voor Tekno Autosports en Garry Rogers Motorsport. Zijn beste resultaat was een zesde plaats in de Bathurst 1000. Een jaar later behaalde de Nieuw-Zeelander zijn eerste overwinning in het Australische Supercars-kampioenschap op de Pukekohe Park Raceway in zijn thuisland.

Van 2017 tot en met 2020 reed McLaughlin voor DJR Team Penske in de topklasse van de Australische toerwagenracerij. Na een tweede plaats in zijn eerste jaar bij het team, wist hij in 2018, 2019 en 2020 overtuigend de titel te veroveren. Ondanks zijn vele successen in de Australische toerwagens, was het jonge racetalent altijd duidelijk over zijn droom: hij wilde uiteindelijk in de Verenigde Staten gaan racen.

De overstap naar de IndyCar Series

Roger Penske besloot McLaughlin in januari 2020 een IndyCar te laten testen. De Nieuw-Zeelander maakte meteen een sterke indruk, wat Penske ertoe bracht om McLaughlin ook deel te laten nemen aan de open tests op het Circuit of The Americas in februari. Dit ging ten koste van Hélio Castroneves, die oorspronkelijk zou rijden tijdens deze testdagen. Een week voor de tests op het circuit in Austin, Texas, kondigde Penske aan dat Scott McLaughlin later dat seizoen zijn NTT IndyCar Series-debuut zou maken.

McLaughlin maakte zijn debuut tijdens de seizoensfinale op de straten van St. Petersburg. De Nieuw-Zeelander maakte een degelijke indruk: hij sloot de vrije training voorafgaand aan de kwalificatie af op de tiende plaats. In de kwalificatie zelf kon hij echter geen potten breken en eindigde op de 21e plek. Tijdens de race leek het redelijk te gaan voor McLaughlin, totdat hij in ronde 47 moest opgeven na een incident in de eerste bocht.

Fulltime IndyCar debuut en doorbraak

In 2021 maakte Scott McLaughlin zijn fulltime IndyCar-debuut bij Team Penske en werd hij met een veertiende plaats in het eindklassement de beste debutant van het jaar (Rookie of the Year). Zijn beste resultaat was een tweede plaats in de eerste race op Texas Motor Speedway. Na dit sterke debuutseizoen werd 2022 zijn doorbraakjaar: hij won drie races en eindigde als vierde in het kampioenschap.

In 2023 groeide McLaughlin uit tot een vaste waarde in de kop van het IndyCar-veld, maar hij won dat jaar slechts één race. Dankzij constante prestaties (slechts drie keer finishte hij niet in de top tien) eindigde hij als derde in het kampioenschap, voor teamgenoten Josef Newgarden en Will Power. In 2024 werd McLaughlin, maar mede door een diskwalificatie in St. Petersburg kon hij zich niet in de strijd om het kampioenschap mengen en eindigde voor het tweede jaar op rij als derde in het kampioenschap.

Terugval in 2025

Nadat McLaughlin zich in de voorgaande jaren had ontwikkeld tot kampioenskandidaat, kende de Nieuw-Zeelander in 2025 een terugval. Net als zijn Team Penske-teamgenoten Josef Newgarden en Will Power worstelde hij met zijn wagen, met tegenvallende resultaten als gevolg. In tegenstelling tot zijn teamgenoten pakte McLaughlin geen enkele overwinning en eindigde hij slechts als tiende in het kampioenschap.
