Alex Palou

Álex Palou heeft in zijn nog autosportcarrière al in meerdere raceklassen gereden en in een aantal daarvan ook meerdere wedstrijden gewonnen. De Spanjaard eindigde in 2014 als derde in het Euroformula Open Championship voor Campos Racing en werd datzelfde jaar tweede in het Spaanse Formule 3-kampioenschap met hetzelfde team.

Van 2017 tot eind 2019 bracht Palou veel tijd door in Japan, waar hij ook meerdere keren races wist te winnen. In 2017 eindigde hij als derde in het Japanse Formule 3-kampioenschap met het team van Threebond with Drago Corse en behaalde drie overwinningen. In datzelfde jaar reed Palou ook in de World Series Formula V8 3.5 voor Teo Martín Motorsport en wist hij een race te winnen, waardoor hij uiteindelijk als tiende in het kampioenschap eindigde.

In 2019 reed Álex Palou in de Japanse Super Formula voor TCS Nakajima Racing, waar hij als derde eindigde in het kampioenschap, met als hoogtepunt een overwinning op Fuji.

Succesvolle test leidt tot IndyCar debuut

Als gevolg van zijn successen in Japan, mocht Palou later dat jaar een wagen van Dale Coyne Racing testen op de Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. De jonge Spanjaard maakte een sterke indruk tijdens deze test, wat hem in 2020 een fulltime zitje bij hetzelfde team opleverde. In zijn debuutseizoen wist de voormalig Super GT-coureur elf van de veertien races te finishen, met een derde plaats op Road America als hoogtepunt.

Indrukwekkend Debuut en Overstap naar Chip Ganassi Racing

Chip Ganassi was overtuigd van Palou's talent, ondanks dat hij in zijn debuutseizoen slechts drie top-tien resultaten behaalde, en contracteerde hem voor het 2021-seizoen. Hij volgde daarmee Felix Rosenqvist op, die naar Arrow McLaren SP vertrok, in de bolide met startnummer 10.

De overstap naar Chip Ganassi Racing bleek een gouden zet voor zowel Palou als het team. In zijn tweede seizoen binnen de hoogste open-wheel klasse van de Verenigde Staten, behaalde Palou tien top-vijf resultaten uit zestien races, waaronder een tweede plaats in de Indianapolis 500 en drie overwinningen. Deze prestaties leverden hem in 2021 zijn eerste NTT IndyCar Series-titel op.

Moeilijkheden in 2022

Na het grote succes van 2021, werd 2022 een aanzienlijk moeilijker seizoen. Naar verluidt reed Palou lange tijd met een scheur in het chassis, wat hem veel snelheid kostte. Voor de seizoensfinale op Laguna Seca kreeg hij een nieuw chassis en won de race overtuigend, maar meer dan een vijfde plaats in het kampioenschap zat er niet in.

Op indrukwekkende wijze kampioen in 2023, 2024 en 2025

2023 begon voor Palou relatief rustig, maar door van de laatste dertien races er vijf te winnen en vier andere podiumplaatsen te behalen, won hij dat jaar met overmacht zijn tweede kampioenschap. In 2024 pakte Palou niet zoveel overwinningen dan een jaar eerder, maar door constant in de top vijf te finishen wist de Spanjaard wel een ruime voorsprong op te bouwen. In tegenstelling tot 2023 moest Palou in 2024 wel tot de slotrace om de titel blijven strijden, maar op de Nashville Superspeedway stelde hij zijn derde titel veilig. In 2025 was Palou oppermachtig en won met overmacht zijn vierde IndyCar kampioenschap.
