Pato O’Ward

Pato O'Ward is een Mexicaans talent dat in zijn nog jonge autosportcarrière al meerdere titels in de wacht heeft weten te slepen. In 2017 won hij het IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in de Prototype Class met Performance Tech Motorsports. In datzelfde jaar won hij met hetzelfde team ook de North American Endurance Cup.

In 2017 reed O'Ward enkele Indy Lights-wedstrijden voor Team Pelfrey, waarin hij één keer op het podium eindigde door derde te worden in St. Petersburg. In 2018 keerde Pato O'Ward terug naar de klasse op fulltime basis bij het team van Andretti Autosport. Na aanvankelijk veel concurrentie te hebben gehad van teamgenoot Colton Herta, pakte O'Ward uiteindelijk overtuigend de Indy Lights-titel door negen van de zeventien races te winnen.

IndyCar Debuut in 2018

Tijdens het finaleweekend van het IndyCar-seizoen 2018 maakte O'Ward, net als Indy Lights vicekampioen Colton Herta, zijn IndyCar-debuut op Sonoma Raceway voor Harding Racing. O'Ward maakte een sterke indruk door zich als vijfde te kwalificeren en de race als negende te finishen. Aanvankelijk was hij in 2019 bevestigd voor een fulltime seizoen bij het team dat toen bekendstond als Harding-Steinbrenner Racing, maar dit ging uiteindelijk niet door omdat het team geen motorendeal kon krijgen voor twee auto's.

Uitdagingen bij Carlin en het Red Bull junior programma

Ondanks dat de deal met Harding-Steinbrenner Racing niet doorging, slaagde O'Ward er op het laatste moment in een overeenkomst te sluiten om dertien van de zeventien races te rijden voor Carlin. Nadat hij in mei echter werd opgenomen in het Red Bull-programma voor jonge talentvolle rijders, werd dit aantal gereduceerd tot zeven races. O'Ward wist zich niet te kwalificeren voor de 103e Indianapolis 500 en zou na de race op Road America in juni de rest van het seizoen niet meer in actie komen in de NTT IndyCar Series.

Red Bull wilde zich met O'Ward richten op races in opstapklassen binnen Europa om hem later mogelijk naar de Formule 1 te sturen. De resultaten vielen echter tegen, waarna Red Bull nog voor het einde van het raceseizoen besloot de Indy Lights-kampioen van 2018 te laten gaan.

Successen met Arrow McLaren

O'Ward bleef niet lang werkloos en werd eind oktober 2019 aangekondigd als een van de rijders bij Arrow McLaren SP voor het IndyCar-seizoen 2020. Zijn eerste fulltime NTT IndyCar Series-seizoen was een groot succes. De Mexicaan scoorde tien top-tien resultaten uit veertien races, met drie tweede plaatsen als beste resultaat, wat hem uiteindelijk een vierde plaats in het eindklassement opleverde.

Na zijn sterke seizoen in 2021 werd 2022 een aanzienlijk lastiger jaar. Ondanks twee overwinningen zorgden acht finishes buiten de top tien ervoor dat hij niet verder kwam dan een zevende plaats in het kampioenschap. In 2023 wist O'Ward geen enkele overwinning te behalen, maar zeven podiumfinishes hielpen hem wel naar een vierde plaats in het kampioenschap. Het 2024 IndyCar seizoen leverde O'Ward wel drie overwinningen en drie tweede plaatsen op, maar doordat hij in zeven van de zeventien races buiten de top tien finishte, kon hij geen rol spelen in de titelstrijd en eindigde dat jaar als vijfde.

In 2025 maakte O'Ward een grote stap vooruit en was hij een vaste waarde in de top vijf, waarbij hij bovendien twee overwinningen behaalde. Hoewel hij het seizoen afsloot op de tweede plaats in het kampioenschap, kon hij zich op geen enkel moment mengen in de strijd om de titel – Alex Palou was dat jaar simpelweg te dominant.
