Justin Wilson

Justin Wilson, geboren in 1978, begon op 11-jarige leeftijd met karten. In 2001 won hij het F3000-kampioenschap, waardoor hij uiteindelijk in 2003 in de Formule 1 bij Minardi in kon stappen. Wilson maakte in 2004 de overstap naar Champ Car en deed dit met Mi-Jack Conquest Racing. Na één jaar bij Conquest te hebben gereden kon hij plaatsnemen bij RuSport, waar hij drie jaar zou blijven rijden en met in totaal vier overwinningen als derde (2005), tweede (2006) en tweede (2007) in het kampioenschap zou eindigen.

Als vervanger van Sebastien Bourdais bij Newman/Haas Racing zou 2008 het grote jaar voor Wilson moeten worden, maar de ‘hereniging’ van Champ Car en de IRL gooide roet in het eten, doordat er met het IRL materiaal moest worden geracet en Wilson niet met Bourdais’ afstellingen kon rijden. Desalniettemin kon Wilson dat jaar nog wel één race winnen.

In 2009 werd Wilson door Dale Coyne Racing ingelijfd als de coureur die het team vooruit zou helpen, wat hij dan ook ten volste deed. Wilson opende het seizoen met een podiumplaats in St. Peterburg, maar het hoogtepunt volgde in Watkins Glen, waar hij het team zijn eerste overwinning in 24 jaar competitie schonk.

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing wilde dat Wilson ditzelfde voor het team uit Indianpolis deed. Met twee tweede plaatsen bracht Wilson het team wel naar een hoger niveau in 2010, maar de zege bleef uit. 2011 zou voor Wilson een moeilijk jaar worden, waar hij Dreyer & Reinbold Racing geen podiumplaatsen kon schenken. Tot overmaat van ramp brak de lange Engelsman op Mid-Ohio zijn rug en moest zo de laatste zeven races missen.

In 2012 keerde Wilson weer terug bij Dale Coyne Racing en ondanks dat het niet zo’n succesvol jaar als 2009 zou worden, pakte hij wel Dale Coyne’s tweede overwinning op de Texas Motor Speedway.

In 2013 reed Wilson zijn beste seizoen voor Dale Coyne. Met 4 podiumplekken, drie top-5 en zes top-10 posities pakten ze de zesde plek in het eindklassement.

In 2014 reed Justin Wilson een vierde seizoen voor Dale Coyne Racing, waarna hij voor 2015 buiten de boot leek te vallen. Andretti Autosport pakte de Engelsman echter op als voor zeven races met steun van Honda. Tijdens de race dat jaar op de Pocono Raceway werd Wilson op zijn helm geraakt door een brokstuk, afkomstig van de wagen van Sage Karam. De Engelsman zou hierdoor in coma raken en overleed een dag later aan zijn verwondingen.
