    Justin Wilson, born in 1978, began karting at the age of 11. In 2001, he won the Formula 3000 Championship, which ultimately led to his Formula One debut with Minardi in 2003. Wilson made the switch to Champ Car in 2004, competing with Mi-Jack Conquest Racing. After one season with Conquest, he moved to RuSport, where he spent three years and achieved a total of four victories, finishing third in the championship in 2005 and second in both 2006 and 2007.

    As the replacement for Sébastien Bourdais at Newman/Haas Racing, 2008 was expected to be Wilson’s breakthrough year. However, the “reunification” of Champ Car and the IRL disrupted those plans, as teams were required to race with IRL equipment and Wilson was unable to use Bourdais’ setups. Nevertheless, Wilson still managed to secure one race victory that season.

    In 2009, Wilson was signed by Dale Coyne Racing as the driver expected to help move the team forward—a role he fulfilled to the fullest. He opened the season with a podium finish in St. Petersburg, but the highlight came at Watkins Glen, where he delivered the team its first victory in 24 years of competition.

    Dreyer & Reinbold Racing hoped Wilson could replicate that success for the Indianapolis-based team. While he elevated the team’s performance with two second-place finishes in 2010, a victory proved elusive. The 2011 season would be a difficult one for Wilson, as he was unable to score any podium finishes for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. To make matters worse, the tall Englishman suffered a back fracture at Mid-Ohio, forcing him to miss the final seven races of the season.

    In 2012, Wilson returned to Dale Coyne Racing and, although the season was not as successful as 2009, he did secure Dale Coyne’s second-ever victory at Texas Motor Speedway.

    In 2013, Wilson enjoyed his strongest season with Dale Coyne Racing. With four podium finishes, three top-five results, and six top-ten finishes, the team claimed sixth place in the final championship standings.

    In 2014, Justin Wilson competed in a fourth season with Dale Coyne Racing, after which he appeared to be without a seat for 2015. Andretti Autosport, however, signed the Englishman for seven races with backing from Honda. During a race that year at Pocono Raceway, Wilson was struck on the helmet by debris from the car of Sage Karam. As a result, he fell into a coma and passed away one day later due to his injuries.
