Biografie
Devlin DeFrancesco is een Canadese IndyCar coureur, welke in 2022 zijn IndyCar Series debuut maakte bij Andretti Autosport. Ondanks dat hij tijdens zijn eerste twee seizoenen weinig indruk wist te maken en in 2024 helemaal geen IndyCar reed, heeft hij voor 2025 een stoeltje weten te bemachtigen bij Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.De weg van DeFrancesco naar de IndyCar Series
DeFrancesco begon zijn carrière op vier wielen op zesjarige leeftijd in de karts en ruilde in 2015 zijn kart in voor een racewagen. De coureur, die zowel een Italiaans als een Canadees paspoort bezit maar onder de Canadese vlag racet, maakte dat jaar zijn debuut in het Ginetta Junior Championship. In deze klasse nam DeFrancesco deel aan twaalf races. Hoewel overwinningen uitbleven, behaalde de Canadees wel zijn allereerste poleposition in de autosport.In 2016 kwam Devlin DeFrancesco uit voor Carlin in het F4 British Championship. Hier eindigde hij als vijfde in het klassement, met één poleposition en drie overwinningen op zijn naam. In de daaropvolgende jaren behaalde DeFrancesco meer dan twintig podiumplekken in verschillende raceklassen. Hij wist races te winnen in het Euroformula Open Championship, het Spaanse Formule 3-kampioenschap en de Indy Pro 2000-klasse. In 2020 eindigde DeFrancesco als tweede in het Indy Pro 2000-kampioenschap, dankzij twee overwinningen.
In 2021 reed DeFrancesco voor Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport in het Indy Lights-kampioenschap, de laatste opstapklasse richting de NTT IndyCar Series. Hij nam deel aan twintig wedstrijden, waarin hij negen keer in de top vijf eindigde. Twee derde plaatsen waren de hoogtepunten van zijn seizoen. Ondanks deze resultaten sloot hij het jaar af als zesde in het eindklassement, op grote afstand van kampioen Kyle Kirkwood en runner-up David Malukas.
Debuut in de IndyCar Series
Ondanks zijn middelmatige Indy Lights-resultaten, besloot Michael Andretti de Canadees een voltijds stoeltje aan te bieden bij zijn NTT IndyCar Series-team voor 2022. Hiermee verving DeFrancesco zijn landgenoot James Hinchcliffe in de auto met startnummer 29.Tijdens zijn eerste twee seizoenen in de IndyCar Series wist DeFrancesco echter weinig indruk te maken. Ondanks dat hij reed voor het topteam Andretti Autosport, finishte hij geen enkele keer in de top tien. Zijn beste resultaten waren twee twaalfde plaatsen. Als gevolg hiervan besloot Andretti Autosport DeFrancesco aan de kant te schuiven voor 2024.
IMSA SportsCar-avontuur in 2024
Voor 2024 slaagde DeFrancesco er niet in een IndyCar-stoeltje te bemachtigen. In plaats daarvan reed hij vijf races met een Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo 2 in het IMSA SportsCar Championship. Zijn beste resultaat was een tweede plaats tijdens Petit Le Mans.Terugkeer naar de IndyCar Series
Ondanks zijn uitstapje naar IMSA bleef DeFrancesco zich richten op een terugkeer in de IndyCar Series. Voor 2025 wist hij een fulltime zitje te bemachtigen bij Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Ook zijn derde volledige IndyCar seizoen zou weinig indrukwekkend blijken - hij finishte ook dit seizoen geen enkele keer in de top tien en eindigde als 26ste in het kampioenschap.Carrière
