De vroege carrière van Santino Ferrucci
Santino Ferrucci is een Amerikaanse coureur die al op jonge leeftijd in de autosport terechtkwam. Ferrucci wist meteen indruk te maken in zijn eerste autosportseizoen door in de SBF 2000 Winter Series van 2012-2013 drie van de tien wedstrijden te winnen en zes keer het podium te halen. Na zijn indrukwekkende autosportdebuut behaalde Ferrucci echter niet veel meer overwinningen. In het Britse Formule 3-kampioenschap van 2014 won hij nog twee races en een jaar later boekte hij zijn voorlopig laatste overwinning in de Toyota Racing Series.IndyCar-debuut en ontwikkeling in 2018
In 2018 was Santino Ferrucci voor het derde opeenvolgende seizoen actief als test- en ontwikkelingscoureur bij het Haas F1 Team. Tot het raceweekend in Silverstone reed hij in het Formule 2-kampioenschap voor Trident. Naast zijn verplichtingen in zowel de Formule 2 als de Formule 1, maakte Ferrucci in juni zijn IndyCar-debuut bij Dale Coyne Racing in de #19 bolide op Belle Isle in Detroit. Hoewel zijn resultaten dat weekend niet indrukwekkend waren, wilde Dale Coyne meer van Ferrucci zien.Ferrucci kreeg vervolgens de kans om zich te bewijzen in een speciaal voor hem ingezette derde bolide tijdens de laatste twee wedstrijden van het IndyCar-seizoen van 2018 op de circuits van Portland International Raceway en Sonoma Raceway. De Amerikaan maakte een goede indruk en eindigde bijna in de top tien in de seizoensfinale in Sonoma, waar hij als elfde over de finish kwam.
Fulltime IndyCar-debuut in 2019
In 2019 maakte Ferrucci zijn fulltime IndyCar-debuut bij Dale Coyne Racing, waar hij teamgenoot was van Sébastien Bourdais. De Amerikaan maakte vrijwel het hele seizoen een zeer goede indruk en viel vooral op door zijn sterke prestaties op de ovals, een type circuit waarop hij nog nooit eerder had gereden. Hij eindigde als vierde in drie van de vijf ovalwedstrijden op de kalender en behaalde een indrukwekkende zevende plaats in zijn eerste Indianapolis 500.Lastiger seizoen in 2020
Ferrucci bleef ook in 2020 rijden voor Dale Coyne Racing, maar het werd een moeilijker jaar voor hem. Hoewel hij opnieuw als dertiende eindigde in het kampioenschap, net als in 2019, finishte hij slechts één keer in de top vijf. In 2021 begon Santino Ferrucci aan een nieuw hoofdstuk in zijn carrière. Naast een deeltijdprogramma van vijf races in de NTT IndyCar Series bij Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, reed hij ook zeven wedstrijden in de NASCAR Xfinity Series voor Sam Hunt Racing. In zijn beperkte IndyCar-programma boekte Ferrucci echter het meeste succes, waarbij hij vier van de vijf races in de top tien eindigde. Zijn beste resultaten waren twee opeenvolgende zesde plaatsen, behaald in de Indianapolis 500 en de eerste race van de dubbele wedstrijd op Belle Isle Park in Detroit.Ook in de NASCAR Xfinity Series deed Ferrucci het zeker niet slecht. Hij wist in alle zeven races waaraan hij deelnam de finish te halen. Op Las Vegas Motor Speedway, waar hij zijn tweede race reed in de op één na hoogste divisie binnen NASCAR, kwam Ferrucci knap als dertiende over de finish.
Invaller in 2022 en terugkeer naar fulltime in 2023
In 2022 wist Ferrucci geen fulltime IndyCar-contract te bemachtigen, maar hij reed twee races als invaller voor Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing en Juncos Hollinger Racing. Daarnaast reed hij de Indianapolis 500 voor Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.In 2023 keerde Ferrucci terug naar een fulltime IndyCar-contract bij A.J. Foyt Racing. Hoewel het een moeizaam seizoen was, kreeg het toch wat glans door een derde plaats in de Indianapolis 500, wat zijn enige top-tienfinish van het jaar was.
Verbeterde prestaties in 2024
In 2024 plukte Ferrucci de vruchten van de samenwerking tussen A.J. Foyt Racing en Team Penske. Hij finishte in elf van de zeventien races in de top tien, pakte zijn eerste pole position in Portland en eindigde knap als negende in het kampioenschap.Een jaar later leek Ferrucci opnieuw een stap vooruit te hebben gezet. Vooral halverwege het seizoen maakte hij indruk met maar liefst twee podiumfinishes in drie races tijd. Het seizoen eindigde echter zoals het begon: vaak achterin het veld. Zelfs op de ovals was Ferrucci nauwelijks competitief, terwijl teamgenoot David Malukas daar vaker vooraan te vinden was.
In 2026 rijdt Ferrucci zijn vierde seizoen voor AJ Foyt Racing.
