Max Chilton begon zijn autosportcarrière in 2005 toen hij in het T Cars kampioenschap ging rijden, hier zou Chilton twee jaar spenderen met in 2006 een tweede plaats in het eindklassement als zijn beste resultaat. Van 2007 tot en met 2009 reed Chilton in het Britse Formule 3 kampioenschap. In 2009 reed Chilton ook nog één wedstrijd voor Comtec Racing, echter was dit zonder succes. In 2010 maakte Max Chilton zijn debuut in de GP2 Series en hier zou hij tot en met 2012 in blijven rijden, in zijn laatste seizoen beleefde Chilton zijn meest succesvolle seizoen in de serie, hij werd vierde in de standen met twee overwinningen. In 2013 maakte Chilton zijn debuut in de Formule 1 voor het team van Marussia.

De jonge Engelsman zou twee jaar voor dit team uitkomen, zonder veel succes. Chilton wist het echter wel te presteren door geen enkele race uit te vallen in zijn debuut seizoen, iets wat maar weinig debutanten tot op heden gelukt is, een dertiende plaats tijdens de Grand Prix van Australië in 2014 zou het beste resultaat uit zijn Formule 1 carrière worden.

In 2015 vertrok Chilton naar Amerika om de Indy Lights te gaan rijden voor het team van Carlin en dit ging niet zonder succes, aangezien Chilton zesmaal de gang mocht maken naar het podium en zelfs één overwinning wist te boeken, dit deed hij zeer verrassend op de oval van Iowa Speedway, Max Chilton zou zijn eerste en enige seizoen in Indy Lights op de vijfde plaats in het klassement afsluiten.

In 2016 maakte Chilton zijn IndyCar debuut bij het team van Chip Ganassi Racing als vervanger van Sage Karam, de Engelsman beleefde een lastig seizoen maar liet zien uit het juiste IndyCar racehout gesneden te zijn door in pas zijn tweede wedstrijd en tevens zijn allereerste IndyCar wedstrijd op een oval een keurige zevende plaats te behalen op Phoenix International Raceway.

Een seizoen later zou het allemaal nog een stuk beter gaan voor Chilton, de voormalig Formule 1 coureur werd elfde in de eindstand na zes wedstrijden in de top tien te zijn geëindigd met een vierde plaats tijdens de Indianapolis 500 als beste resultaat.

Sinds 2018 is de Engelsman actief bij het team van Carlin Racing al wacht voor Chilton tot op heden nog steeds het eerste top tien resultaat bij dit team en beleefde de voormalig Formule 1-coureur in 2019 een dieptepunt waarin de Engelsman zich voor het eerst in zijn carrière niet wist te kwalificeren voor de Indianapolis 500. Nog geen maand later in de week naar aanloop van het race weekend op Texas Motor Speedway kondigde Chilton aan voor onbepaalde tijd geen oval wedstrijden meer te willen rijden in verband met zorgen omtrent de veiligheid op sommige van deze banen.

Ook in 2021 rijdt Max Chilton alleen de races op permanente -en stratencircuits maar maakt de Engelsman net als in 2020 voor de Indianapolis 500 een uitzondering waar de voormalig Formule 1-coureur net als de afgelopen vijf jaar ook dit jaar weer een poging zal doen om zich bij het veld van 33 te kunnen voegen voor de wereldberoemde 500-mijl race.
