    De weg die Charlie Kimball heeft gevolgd naar de IndyCar Series is er één die weinig Amerikaanse coureurs volgen. Na een jaar in de Formula Dodge en de Amerikaanse Formule Ford Series, maakte Kimball al direct de overstap naar Europa om in het Brits Formule Ford kampioenschap te rijden en pakte hier in 2004 twee overwinningen en elf podiumfinishes. De Amerikaan maakte vervolgens de volgende stap in de Britse autosportladder: Het Brits Formule 3 kampioenschap en finishte dat jaar indrukwekkend als tweede in het kampioenschap met vijf overwinningen achter zijn naam.

    Na een jaar in het Europees Formule 3 kampioenschap te hebben gereden volgde de Formule Renault 3.5 Series, waar aan het eind van het seizoen een groot probleem werd geconstateerd: Kimball had type 1 Diabetes. Kimball leerde de ziekte echter te combineren met zijn autosport carrière en keerde na een tweede seizoen in het Europees Formule 3 kampioenschap in 2009 terug naar Amerika om in de Firestone Indy Lights te rijden, met sponsoring van een insulinefabrikant.

    Twee seizoenen in de Indy Lights gaf Kimball voldoende ervaring voor de volgende stap in zijn carrière: De IZOD IndyCar Series. Met Ganassi Racing kende Kimball en lastig eerste seizoen, maar zette in het tweede jaar al een grote stap vooruit en was regelmatig in de top tien te vinden. Het hoogtepunt van het 2012 seizoen volgde in Toronto, waar hij met een tweede plaats zijn eerste podiumresultaat scoorde. Nog voordat het IndyCar Series kampioenschap van 2013 begon, won hij de 24 Hours of Daytona met medecoureurs Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Pruett, en Memo Rojas. Dat smaakte naar meer en Charlie Kimball won zijn eerste Indycar race tijdens de Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.

    In 2014 kwam Charlie Kimball wederom uit voor het team van Chip Ganassi maar was de Amerikaan niet instaat om zijn succes van 2013 te herhalen, Kimball werd slechts veertiende in de eindstand met een derde plaats in Detroit als beste seizoensresultaat. In 2015 ging het allemaal weer een stukje beter voor de enkelvoudig race winnaar, Charlie Kimball werd twaalfde in de eindstand met als hoogtepunt een derde plaats behaald tijdens de Indianapolis 500, Kimball had in die wedstrijd tevens de snelste ronde van de race gereden. In het jaar 2016 beleefde Kimball een seizoen waarin hij eigenlijk niet zo veel opviel maar wel constante resultaten scoorde, Kimball kwam namelijk in alle zestien wedstrijden aan de finish en eindigde elf maal in de top tien met als beste resultaat twee vijfde plaatsen behaald tijdens de Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis en de Indianapolis 500.

    Na het succes van 2016 werd het seizoen 2017 er eentje om snel te vergeten, Kimball scoorde slechts vijf top tien resultaten met een zesde plaats op Road America als beste seizoensresultaat, de Amerikaan eindigde als zeventiende in de eindstand in een seizoen waarin zijn eerste pole position op Texas Motor Speedway als het enige lichtpuntje in een verder teleurstellend seizoen kan worden beschouwd. Na zeven seizoenen bij Chip Ganassi Racing te hebben gereden kwam Kimball sinds 2018 uit voor het team van Carlin, na in het eerste seizoen voor dit team een enorm goede indruk te hebben gemaakt met als hoogtepunt een vijfde plaats in de straten van Toronto, reed Kimball in 2019 slechts een deeltijd programma bestaande uit zeven wedstrijden.

    In 2020 keerde de Amerikaan bij A.J. Foyt Racing echter weer voltijd terug in de NTT IndyCar Series, Kimball beleefde echter een moeilijk seizoen waarin twee top tien resultaten het hoogtepunt waren voor de voormalig Chip Ganassi Racing coureur met een achtste plaats behaald tijdens de seizoensfinale in St. Petersburg als beste resultaat. Ook in 2021 zal Charlie Kimball weer uitkomen voor het team van de legendarische A.J. Foyt maar niet meer op voltijd basis, Kimball zal zich komend seizoen namelijk tevreden moeten stellen met een beperkt deeltijd programma bestaande uit het rijden van de GMR Grand Prix op het infield van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway en een deelname aan de 105e Indianapolis 500.
