Mike Comway begint zijn carriere in de karts. In 1998 wordt hij kampioen in de British JICA karting series en British Formula A karting series in 2000.
In 2001 rijdt Conway in de Britse Junior Formula ford kampioenschap voor Martin Donnelly Racing en eindigt het seizoen als 6e met een overwinning op zak. Als hij in 2002 voor Duckhams rijdt in de Britse Formula Ford kampioenschap pakt hij zes podiumplaatsen en sluit het jaar af als 4e.
In 2003 stapte Conway in bij Fortec Motorsport in de British Formula Renault en pakte de vierde plek in het eindklassement met een overwinning en vijf podiumplaatsen op zijn conto. In 2004 wist hij met acht overwinningen die titel overtuigend toe te eigenen. Van de achttien wedstrijden stond hij zestien keer op het podium.

In de Brits F3 was hij in 2005 de beste rookie en verdiende hij met een overwinning en zes podiumplaatsen de derde positie in het kampioenschap.
Ook in deze competitie wist hij in zijn tweede jaar de titel te grijpen. Met zeventien podiumplekken, waarvan acht overwinningen, werd hij in 2006 Brits F3 kampioen.

Na al een paar races in 2006 te hebben gereden in de GP2, kwam Conway in 2007 en 2008 een heel seizoen uit in deze klasse. Hij komt die jaren een paar keer op het podium, met een overwinning in Monaco in 2008. Dat jaar is hij ook testrijder voor het F1 team van Honda Racing F1.

In 2008 kreeg Conway de kans om een Indycar test te doen. Hij viel meteen op door toptijden te rijden in zijn eerste sessie en Dreyer & Reinbold contracteerde hem voor het 2009 seizoen. Met een podiumfinish eindigde hij als 17e.
Tijdens de Indy 500 van 2010 crashte Conway zwaar in de hekken na te zijn gelanceerd over de bolide van Ryan Hunter-Reay. Hij liep een gebroken enkel en wervel op en was uitgeschakeld voor de rest van het seizoen.

Voor het seizoen van 2011 tekende Conway bij Andretti Autosport en hij behaalde in Long Beach zijn allereerste Indycar overwinning. De rest van het seizoen was echter een teleurstelling. Waarschijnlijk met zijn zware klap een jaar eerder in gedachte, wist hij zich niet te kwalificeren voor de 2011 Indy 500.
In 2012 reed de Brit voor het team van A.J. Foyt. Tijdens de Indy 500 kwalificeerde hij zich achterin het veld. Tijdens de race raakte zijn voorvleugel beschadigd tijdens een pitstop en een paar ronde later spinde Conway vlak voor Will Power, ze raakten elkaar en de Brit raakte airborn, wederom crashend in de hekken van de speedway. Dit keer kwam hij er zonder kleerscheuren vanaf, maar aan het eind van het seizoen meldde Conway zich af voor de race van Fontana, omdat hij zich niet meer veilig voelde op de ovals.

In 2013 besloot Conway om in de FIA World Endurance kampioenschap te gaan rijden. Hij en co-drivers John Martin end Roman Rusinov werden uit de finishuitslag geschrapt in Le Mans, maar met vier andere overwinningen in de serie, pakten ze de derde plek in het 2013 LMP2 Drivers trophy seizoen.

In 2014 rijdt Mike Conway voor het team van Ed Carpenter, waar hij alle wedstrijden zal rijden, met uitzondering van de ovals.
