    Mario Moraes is met zijn negentien jaar één van de jongste coureurs van het IndyCar Series veld. Via de Braziliaanse Formule Renault en de Zuid-Amerikaanse Formule 3 maakte de Braziliaan in 2007 de overstap naar Europa om in de Brite Formule 3 te rijden, waar hij als veertiende in het kampioenschap eindigde. Voor 2008 wilde Moraes Champ Car rijden voor Dale Coyne Racing en testte met succes voor het team op Sebring. Toen bekend werd gemaakt dat Champ Car en IndyCar herenigd zouden worden was hij voor Dale Coyne Racing de meest logische coureur voor de tweede wagen van het team, naast Bruno Junqueira.
