Biografie
Ryan Hunter-Reay is een ervaren IndyCar coureur, welke al in 2003 zijn debuut maakte. De Amerikaan won in zijn carrière één IndyCar kampioenschap (2012) en de Indy 500 (2014).De ladder naar de IndyCar Series
Ryan Hunter-Reay behaalde met zes Amerikaanse titels groot succes in de karting, waarna hij de logische overstap maakte naar de Skip Barber Formula Dodge. In deze serie werd hij direct kampioen. In 2000 en 2001 reed Hunter-Reay in de Barber Dodge Pro Series, waarna hij in 2004 de volgende stap zette in de ladder naar Champ Car: Toyota Atlantic.Debuut in Champ Car
In zijn eerste seizoen in de Atlantics eindigde hij als zesde, met drie overwinningen. Hiermee maakte hij zoveel indruk dat hij in 2003 zijn Champ Car-debuut mocht maken voor het nieuwe American Spirit Team Johansson, als teamgenoot van de ervaren Jimmy Vasser. Ondanks dat het team over weinig financiële middelen en het tragere Reynard-chassis beschikte, wist Hunter-Reay een podiumplaats te behalen in Mid-Ohio en zelfs te winnen in Surfers Paradise onder opdrogende omstandigheden.Vele teamwissels gaan ten koste van de prestaties
Toen American Spirit aan het einde van dat jaar failliet ging, stapte de Amerikaan over naar Herdez. Hij begon het seizoen sterk en won dominant in Milwaukee, maar gedurende het seizoen zakte hij langzaam terug in het veld. In 2005 reed hij voor Rocketsports, maar dit team bleek niet competitief te zijn, waardoor Hunter-Reay in 2006 zonder stoeltje kwam te zitten.Na enkele races in de A1GP en de 24 uur van Daytona kon Hunter-Reay in 2007 Jeff Simmons vervangen bij Rahal-Letterman Racing voor de laatste zes races van het IndyCar-seizoen. Hier presteerde hij zo goed dat hij in 2008 het volledige seizoen voor Rahal mocht rijden. Echter, turbulente tijden volgden al snel, omdat Rahal-Letterman Racing zich uit de IndyCar Series terugtrok.
Carrière gered door IZOD
Een contract met IndyCar-sponsor IZOD, die Hunter-Reay als gezicht van de sponsor binnen IndyCar wilde inzetten, redde zijn carrière. In 2009 begon hij bij Vision Racing, maar na de race in Texas verving hij de geblesseerde Vitor Meira bij AJ Foyt Racing. Het IZOD-contract leidde een jaar later tot een overeenkomst met Andretti Autosport, waar hij aanvankelijk een beperkt aantal races reed. Na een tweede plaats in Brazilië en een overwinning in Long Beach werd hij echter de sterkste rijder van het team, waardoor hij alsnog het volledige seizoen mocht uitrijden.Kampioenschap en Indianapolis 500 zege
Na een succesvol eerste seizoen bij Andretti werd zijn contract verlengd. Dit resulteerde in 2012 in het eerste en uiteindelijk enige IndyCar Series-kampioenschap van Hunter-Reay. In 2013 kende hij een sterk seizoen met twee overwinningen en drie tweede plaatsen, maar hij eindigde uiteindelijk als zevende in het kampioenschap.In 2014 reed Hunter-Reay opnieuw een volledig seizoen voor Andretti Autosport. Hoewel de titel buiten bereik bleef, scoorde hij drie overwinningen, waaronder de prestigieuze 98e Indianapolis 500. In 2015, een moeizaam seizoen, wist hij alsnog twee races te winnen, maar zijn overwinning op Pocono Raceway kreeg een bittere nasmaak vanwege het fatale ongeluk van teamgenoot Justin Wilson.
Verminderde prestaties
In 2018 won Hunter-Reay voor het eerst sinds 2015 weer races en eindigde hij als vierde in het eindklassement met overwinningen in Detroit en Sonoma. De daaropvolgende jaren daalden zijn prestaties snel, met 2021 als dieptepunt: slechts drie keer finishte hij in de top tien. Andretti Autosport verlengde zijn contract niet.Comeback bij Dreyer & Reinbold Racing
Na in 2022 niet te hebben gereden, keerde Hunter-Reay in 2023 terug in de IndyCar Series. Hij reed de Indy 500 voor Dreyer & Reinbold Racing en eindigde als elfde. Dit resultaat opende de deur bij Ed Carpenter Racing, waar hij de ontslagen Conor Daly verving. Hoewel hij het team vooruit hielp op het gebied van afstelling, was een tiende plaats zijn beste resultaat.In 2024 keerde Hunter-Reay terug bij Dreyer & Reinbold Racing voor de Indy 500. Hij maakte indruk door zich met dit parttime team te kwalificeren voor de Fast 12. Een veelbelovend resultaat leek in zicht, totdat een aanrijding met Scott Dixon een vroeg einde aan zijn race maakte. Een jaar later deed hij een nieuwe poging met Dreyer & Reinbold Racing en leek zelfs goede papieren in handen te hebben voor de overwinnig, totdat hij in de pits zonder brandstof viel en na 171 ronden de race moest staken.
