    Ryan Briscoe is waarschijnlijk de meest allround coureur in het IndyCar Series veld. Na titels in karting te hebben gewonnen in Australië, Noord-Amerika en Europa begon hij in Italië in 2000 zijn autosport carrière in de Formule Renault en won één jaar later dat kampioenschap.

    In 2002 kwam hij in het opleidingstraject van het Toyota Formule 1 team terecht en begon het seizoen in de Formule 3000. Dit bleek een stapje te hoog, waarna hij terug keerde naar de Duitse Formule 3 en een jaar later de F3 Euroseries, waar hij kampioen werd met 8 overwinningen.

    Dankzij deze indrukwekkende resultaten werd hij in 2004 derde coureur bij het Toyota Formule 1 team, maar tot een racestoeltje kwam het nooit. In 2005 kreeg hij een contract aangeboden door top IRL team Ganassi Racing, wat hij niet kon weigeren. Echter was hij zeer onbetrouwbaar op de ovals en scoorde alleen op de enkele normale circuits op de kalender. Het dieptepunt volgde op Chicagoland, waar hij extreem zwaar crashte en het nog maar net overleefde.

    Na enkele Champ Car tests reed Briscoe de 24 uur van Daytona, de Indy 500 en één andere IRL race, de Sandown 500 en de Bathurst 1000 in de Australische V8 Supercars, enkele A1GP races om het seizoen af te sluiten met twee Champ Car races als vervanger van Cristiano da Matta bij RuSport. Na het zeer afwisselende jaar kreeg Briscoe in 2007 meer rust dankzij een fulltime contract om voor Penske in de American Le Mans Series te racen. Dankzij goede prestaties voor dit team mocht hij een jaar later doorschuiven naar het IndyCar team van Penske, als vervanger van Sam Hornish.

    In 2008 zijn eerste jaar bij Penske haalde hij de vijfde eindpositie met zijn eerste overwinningen (3) in de Indycar Series en 2009 doet hij met drie gewonnen races en acht 2e plaatsen serieus mee voor het kampioenschap. Briscoe liet zich echter verschalken door Dario Franchitti, die er in de laatste beslissende race met de titel vandoor ging. Briscoe wordt maar net derde.

    In 2010 domineerde zijn teamgenoot het kampioenschap en Briscoe komt met maar een overwinning niet verder dan een vijfde plek en ook de twee opeenvolgende jaren met maar een enkele race op zijn naam zijn lichtelijk teleurstellend te noemen. Aan het eind van 2012 verloor Briscoe zijn stoeltje bij Team Penske.

    In 2013 reed de Australiër de Indy 500 voor het team van Chip Ganassi en vervolgens nog zes races voor Panther Racing.

    In 2014 rijdt Ryan Brisco voor Chip Ganassi Racing.
