Devlin DeFrancesco is a Canadian IndyCar driver who made his IndyCar Series debut in 2022 with Andretti Autosport. Although he failed to make a strong impression during his first two seasons and did not compete in IndyCar at all in 2024, he secured a seat with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for 2025.
DeFrancesco's Path to the IndyCar Series
DeFrancesco began his four-wheel racing career at the age of six in karting, switching to race cars in 2015. The driver, who holds both Italian and Canadian passports but competes under the Canadian flag, made his debut that year in the Ginetta Junior Championship. In this series, DeFrancesco competed in twelve races. Although he did not secure any wins, he did achieve his first-ever pole position in motorsport.
In 2016, Devlin DeFrancesco raced for Carlin in the F4 British Championship. He finished fifth in the standings, with one pole position and three victories to his name. Over the following years, DeFrancesco collected more than twenty podium finishes across various racing categories. He secured race wins in the Euroformula Open Championship, the Spanish Formula 3 Championship, and the Indy Pro 2000 series. In 2020, DeFrancesco finished second in the Indy Pro 2000 championship, thanks to two race victories.
In 2021, DeFrancesco drove for Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport in the Indy Lights championship, the final stepping-stone to the NTT IndyCar Series. He participated in twenty races, finishing in the top five nine times. Two third-place finishes were the highlights of his season. Despite these results, he ended the year sixth in the overall standings, far behind champion Kyle Kirkwood and runner-up David Malukas.
IndyCar Series Debut
Despite his modest Indy Lights results, Michael Andretti decided to offer the Canadian a full-time seat with his NTT IndyCar Series team for 2022. DeFrancesco replaced his compatriot James Hinchcliffe in the car bearing number 29.
During his first two seasons in the IndyCar Series, DeFrancesco struggled to make an impact. Despite driving for the top-tier team Andretti Autosport, he failed to secure a single top-ten finish. His best results were two twelfth-place finishes. As a result, Andretti Autosport decided to part ways with DeFrancesco for the 2024 season.
IMSA SportsCar Adventure in 2024
For 2024, DeFrancesco was unable to secure an IndyCar seat. Instead, he competed in five races with a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo 2 in the IMSA SportsCar Championship. His best result was a second-place finish at Petit Le Mans.
Return to the IndyCar Series
Despite his stint in IMSA, DeFrancesco remained focused on returning to the IndyCar Series. For 2025, he successfully secured a full-time seat with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
