  • Biography

Michele Alboreto was an Italian racing driver who competed in 194 Formula One Grands Prix between 1981 and 1994, winning five of them.

In 1996, he competed in the first five races of the newly established Indy Racing League for Team Scania. In his only Indianapolis 500 (1996), he started twelfth but retired after 43 laps due to a gearbox failure. During his fourth race, at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire, Alboreto achieved his best finish: third place. After five races, he ended his IndyCar career and turned his focus to sports cars.

After winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche in 1997, he also won the 12 Hours of Sebring with Audi in March 2001. A month later, however, Alboreto was killed in a serious testing accident at EuroSpeedway Lausitz in Germany after suffering a left-rear tire failure at speeds exceeding 190 mph (300 km/h).
