The Early Career of Santino Ferrucci

Santino Ferrucci is an American driver who entered motorsports at a young age. Ferrucci immediately made an impression in his first motorsport season by winning three out of ten races and securing six podium finishes in the 2012-2013 SBF 2000 Winter Series. It seemed like a great success story was in the making for the then very young Ferrucci.

Limited Successes After a Spectacular Start

After his impressive motorsport debut, Ferrucci did not secure many more victories. In the 2014 British Formula 3 Championship, he won two races, and a year later, he recorded his last victory to date in the Toyota Racing Series.

IndyCar Debut and Development in 2018

In 2018, Santino Ferrucci was active for the third consecutive season as a test and development driver for the Haas F1 Team. Up until the race weekend at Silverstone, he competed in the Formula 2 Championship with Trident. In addition to his commitments in both Formula 2 and Formula 1, Ferrucci made his IndyCar debut in June with Dale Coyne Racing, driving the #19 car at Belle Isle in Detroit. Although his results that weekend were not very impressive, Dale Coyne wanted to see more of Ferrucci.

Ferrucci was then given the opportunity to prove himself in a third car specially entered for him during the final two races of the 2018 IndyCar season at Portland International Raceway and Sonoma Raceway. The American made a good impression and nearly finished in the top ten in the season finale at Sonoma, where he crossed the line in eleventh place.

Full-Time IndyCar Debut in 2019

In 2019, Ferrucci made his full-time IndyCar debut with Dale Coyne Racing, where he was teammates with Sébastien Bourdais. The American made a very good impression throughout the season and stood out, particularly for his strong performances on ovals, a type of track he had never raced on before. He finished fourth in three of the five oval races on the calendar and achieved an impressive seventh place in his first Indianapolis 500.

A Tougher Season in 2020

Ferrucci continued racing for Dale Coyne Racing in 2020, but it proved to be a more challenging year for him. While he once again finished thirteenth in the championship, just like in 2019, he only managed one top-five finish. This came at the Indianapolis 500, where he crossed the line in fourth place.

Part-Time Program in IndyCar and NASCAR in 2021

In 2021, Santino Ferrucci embarked on a new chapter in his career. In addition to a part-time program of five races in the NTT IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, he also competed in seven races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Sam Hunt Racing. Ferrucci achieved the most success in his limited IndyCar program, finishing in the top ten in four of the five races. His best results were two consecutive sixth-place finishes, achieved in the Indianapolis 500 and the first race of the doubleheader at Belle Isle Park in Detroit.

Ferrucci also performed well in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He finished all seven races he participated in. At Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where he competed in just his second race in NASCAR’s second-highest division, Ferrucci impressively finished in thirteenth place.

Substitute in 2022 and Return to Full-Time in 2023

In 2022, Ferrucci was unable to secure a full-time IndyCar contract, but he filled in for two races with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and Juncos Hollinger Racing. He also competed in the Indianapolis 500 for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

In 2023, Ferrucci returned to a full-time IndyCar contract with A.J. Foyt Racing. Although it was a challenging season, it was highlighted by a third-place finish in the Indianapolis 500, which was his only top-ten finish of the year.

Improved Performances in 2024

In 2024, Ferrucci reaped the benefits of the collaboration between A.J. Foyt Racing and Team Penske. He finished in the top ten in eleven of the seventeen races, secured his first pole position in Portland, and finished a commendable ninth in the championship.
