Driver details
Stefan Wilson, Indianapolis
Date of birth: September 20 1989
Nationality: United Kingdom
First race: Baltimore, 2013

Introduction

Stefan Wilson was the younger brother of Justin Wilson, who tragically passed away on August 24, 2015. Throughout his career, Stefan had competed in four IndyCar races. The Englishman made his debut in the premier open-wheel series in the United States during the Grand Prix of Baltimore in 2013. In this race, he drove for Dale Coyne Racing as a teammate to his older brother.

Career in Indy Lights

Before debuting in the NTT IndyCar Series, Wilson spent four seasons competing in the Indy Lights championship. In this series, the Sheffield-born driver enjoyed his best season in 2011. The former British Formula 3 driver finished third in the championship standings that year, with two wins on the streets of Toronto and at Kentucky Speedway.

IndyCar Debut

Wilson made his IndyCar debut in Baltimore in 2013. Despite a solid performance, he had to wait nearly three years to race in an IndyCar again. That opportunity came during the 100th Indianapolis 500 in 2016. Unlike his debut race, Wilson did not finish his first Indy 500. The former Formula Palmer Audi driver retired on lap 120 due to mechanical issues.

Indy 500 with Andretti Autosport

After racing for KVSH Racing in 2016, Wilson returned to the Indy 500 two years later, driving for Andretti Autosport. He had originally been slated to race for the team in 2017, but when Andretti Autosport unexpectedly secured a seat for two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso, Wilson's opportunity was postponed by a year.

In his second Indianapolis 500, Wilson delivered an impressive performance, even leading three laps. However, on lap 196, he was forced to make a quick pit stop for fuel while leading the race. This ended his chances for a sensational victory. Nevertheless, he achieved his best IndyCar result to date, finishing 15th in the race.

Return to the Indy 500

After sitting out the 2019 and 2020 editions of The Greatest Spectacle In Racing, Wilson returned to action in 2021. Once again driving for Andretti Autosport in the world-famous 500-mile race, the younger Wilson finished last. His race ended prematurely on lap 33 when he lost control of his car entering the pit lane and crashed into the wall.

Racing for DragonSpeed/Cusick Motorsports

Despite the disappointment of 2021, Wilson raced in the 2022 Indy 500 for DragonSpeed/Cusick Motorsports. Although he qualified in 33rd and last place, he managed to finish the race in 26th position.

Accident in 2023

A year later, Wilson had a much stronger qualifying session for the Indy 500, driving for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. He secured 25th place on the grid. Unfortunately, disaster struck the Monday after qualifying. During practice, Wilson and fellow Briton Katherine Legge collided, sending both hard into the wall. Wilson suffered a back injury in the crash, forcing him to miss the Indy 500.
