About Kenny Brack
Biography
Kenny Bräck is a Swedish IndyCar driver and the winner of the 1998 Indy Racing League championship. After finishing second in the International Formula 3000 Championship in 1996, Bräck's European racing career hit a dead end. As a result, he made the move to America, where the newly established Indy Racing League was looking for drivers.
In his debut Indy Racing League season, Bräck showcased his speed, earning a transfer to the larger AJ Foyt Racing team. That season, he went on to win three races, accumulating enough points to secure the championship title. The following year, Bräck finished second in the championship standings, but his victory at the Indy 500 made up for it.
Bräck’s strong performances, combined with his background on permanent circuits, earned him a transfer to the stronger CART Series, where he joined Team Rahal. The guitar-playing Swede quickly proved his competitiveness in the series and finished fourth in the championship despite not securing any wins.
The 2001 season was expected to be Bräck's opportunity to contend for the title. However, he ultimately finished second to Gil de Ferran. This season brought him yet another promotion, this time to the prestigious Chip Ganassi Racing team. Unfortunately, the partnership with Ganassi did not succeed; Bräck was unable to fight for the championship and ended the season in sixth place. At the end of the year, Bräck and Ganassi parted ways.
Seeking renewed success, Bräck returned to his old winning formula in 2003: the Indy Racing League, in collaboration with Team Rahal – which had partially shifted to the competing race series. Despite consistent top-ten finishes, the season was disappointing overall.
Bräck’s season ended dramatically during the finale at Texas Motor Speedway when he collided with Thomas Scheckter and crashed into the fences. The crash recorded a peak impact of over 214g, leaving Bräck with severe injuries that took him 18 months to recover from.
In 2005, Bräck made his much-anticipated return to the IndyCar Series, driving the Indy 500 for Rahal Letterman Racing. However, this effort was also unsuccessful: after qualifying in 23rd place, he retired from the race after 92 laps due to a mechanical failure. This marked the end of Bräck’s IndyCar career.
