The Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington turned out to be a huge success, with plenty of on-track action, packed grandstands, a great atmosphere and both Republican and Democratic delegations in attendance for the politically charged event. Kyle Kirkwood scored his seventh IndyCar win, his sixth on a street course, meaning he has won 25% of all his starts on this type of track! What else stood out? We analyze the race weekend based on a series of numbers!

920 - Andretti Global has taken a major step forward this year. Not only does the team have the second-most wins behind Chip Ganassi Racing, it also moved ahead of Team Penske in the team standings last weekend when looking at the two best finishes for each team. In this unofficial classification, Andretti Global has 920 points, compared to 905 for Penske.

122 - A total of 122 on-track passes for position were recorded during the race, almost one pass per lap!

91 - Due to Alex Palou's string of problems, Kyle Kirkwood has reduced his championship deficit to 91 points. That means Palou is not yet 100% certain of winning his fifth IndyCar title. To clinch the championship during Saturday's race in Milwaukee, Palou must increase his lead over Kirkwood (and Christian Lundgaard) to 108 points. Still, there is a good chance the title can be celebrated in Milwaukee, as Palou's lead can drop to as little as 54 points before Sunday's race and he would still be guaranteed the championship.

57.95 - Will Power set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 57.950 seconds.

43 - After Juncos Hollinger Racing drivers Rinus VeeKay and Sting Ray Robb had completed all fourteen previous races, the Washington race was a low point of the season for both drivers - both were left with damaged cars by lap 43. To make matters worse, neither retirement was their own fault; Robb hit the crashed car of David Malukas, while VeeKay ended up in the wall after an opportunistic move by Marcus Armstrong.

37 - The Andretti Global cars were clearly the cars to be in if you wanted to make passes; all three drivers occupied the top three spots in the passing classification! Will Power was the most productive with thirteen passes, while Kyle Kirkwood and Marcus Ericsson finished the race with twelve passes each. The only other driver who could say the same was Christian Lundgaard, also with twelve passes.

25 - Kyle Kirkwood's victory in Washington was his sixth on a street course, meaning he has won 25% of his starts on street courses!

24 - Caio Collet finished Sunday's race in ninth place - his long-awaited first top-ten finish. That makes the Brazilian the 24th full-time driver to finish at least one race in the top ten this year. The only driver who has yet to finish in the top ten this season is Sting Ray Robb - his best finish is 11th at Markham.

18 - Kyffin Simpson was the driver who gained the most positions from his starting spot; he started the race 23rd and finished fifth - a gain of 18 positions!

17 - Pato O'Ward will have few positive memories of his race in Washington; he dropped back due to problems while refueling his car, struggled for pace and was passed more than anyone else - a total of 17 times.

7 - Kyle Kirkwood's victory on the streets of Washington was his seventh IndyCar win. That moves him into a tie for 53rd place on the all-time Indy Car wins list, alongside drivers including Arie Luyendyk, Scott McLaughlin and Justin Wilson.

6 - Nolan Siegel finished the race in Washington sixth, the best finish of his IndyCar Series career! His previous best finish was seventh, at WWT Raceway in 2024.

6 - Race control was busy handing out penalties during the race, with six penalties issued:

Romain Grosjean was dropped one position after leaving too large a gap behind the pace car

Dennis Hauger was dropped three positions for an 'unsafe release' from his pit box

Alex Palou received a drive-through penalty for hitting a tire that was staged in the pit lane

Alex Palou and Felix Rosenqvist were sent to the back of the field for a restart after making an emergency pit stop while the pits were closed

Marcus Armstrong received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for his collision with Christian Rasmussen, ruining the promising races of both Rasmussen and Rinus VeeKay

4 - Four different drivers led laps during the race: Kyle Kirkwood (128 laps), Graham Rahal (12 laps), Will Power (4 laps), and Scott McLaughlin (3 laps).

4 - With a fourth-place in qualifying, Christian Rasmussen recorded his best starting position in the IndyCar Series.

3 - Andretti Global scored its third win of 2026 with Kirkwood's victory. Interestingly, all three wins came at tracks that were new to the schedule; in addition to Washington, Kirkwood won in Arlington, while Ericsson won in Markham.
