242.206 - The highest speed recorded on a speed trap during the Month of May was 242.206 mph (389.709 km/h)! Scott McLaughlin reached this speed during Top 12 qualifying just before Turn 3. The highest recorded top speed ever was even faster: partly due to a strong tailwind, Conor Daly reached 243.724 mph (392.152 km/h) before Turn 3 in 2022.
709 - With the 32 laps he led, Scott Dixon extended his own record for the most Indy 500 laps led to 709. He also holds the record for the most Indy 500 races in which he has led at least one lap: 17.
629 - During this year’s Indy 500, 629 passes were recorded, including 567 passes for position. That is far more than last year, when there were ‘only’ 483 passes, including 394 for position.
309 - Indianapolis Motor Speedway has not been kind to ECR this year; in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis both cars retired after completing a combined total of just 48 out of 170 laps. During the Indy 500, all three of the team’s cars retired as well, meaning only 269 of the 600 possible laps were completed. Altogether, ECR had hoped to complete 770 race laps across both events - instead, they managed just 309...
225.126 - Conor Daly was the only driver in the entire field to complete a lap in under 40 seconds during the Indy 500; on lap 182 he completed the 2.5-mile lap in 39.980 seconds, averaging 225.126 mph.
61 - Alex Palou recorded the most passes of any driver with 61. This high number was largely the result of swapping positions at the front with other drivers in order to save fuel.
52 - In addition to making the most passes, Alex Palou was also the most-passed driver in the field! Once again, this was the result of all the position swapping among the leaders.
23 - For the 23rd time, Ed Carpenter competed in the Indy 500 without scoring a victory. In doing so, he passed George Snider for the most Indy 500 starts without a win.
18 - Mick Schumacher ultimately finished as the highest-placed rookie. Despite brushing the wall on the penultimate restart, he finished the race in 18th place.
15 - Romain Grosjean gained the most positions relative to his starting spot - the Frenchman started 24th and finished 9th, a gain of 15 positions!
14 - No fewer than 14 different drivers led at least one lap: Alex Palou (59 laps), Scott Dixon (32 laps), David Malukas (30 laps), Felix Rosenqvist (25 laps), Pato O'Ward (9 laps), Caio Collet (9 laps), Rinus VeeKay (8 laps), Alexander Rossi (6 laps), Scott McLaughlin (5 laps), Conor Daly (4 laps), Kyffin Simpson (4 laps), Marcus Armstrong (3 laps), Romain Grosjean (3 laps) and Christian Rasmussen (3 laps).
6 - Qualifying showed just how much more important the driver is than the equipment; all six spots in the Firestone Fast 6 were occupied by drivers from different teams. In fact, the first four rows of the grid featured nine different teams!
5 - This was only the fifth time that the driver leading at the white flag - signaling the start of the final lap - was passed for the win on the final lap. The last time this happened was two years ago, when Josef Newgarden passed Pato O'Ward on the final lap.
4 - For the eighth time in history, the race was won from fourth on the starting grid. The last time this happened was in 2017, when Takuma Sato won from the fourth starting spot.
3 - Felix Rosenqvist became the third Swede to win the Indy 500. Kenny Brack (1999) and Marcus Ericsson (2022) previously achieved the feat.
3 - With six laps to go, Helio Castroneves parked his car in the pits with mechanical issues. In his 26 Indy 500 starts, it was the third time he failed to reach the finish.
2 - Not only was this the second consecutive year that a driver won his very first Indy 500, it was also the second consecutive year for a driver to win his first oval race!
2 - Despite all the action on track, race control had a surprisingly quiet afternoon; only two penalties had to be handed out! Dale Coyne Racing drivers Romain Grosjean and Dennis Hauger were the main offenders - Grosjean had to restart at the back for passing under yellow, while Hauger received a drive-through penalty for speeding in pit lane. After the race, Alex Palou was also docked five points because his front wing was not mounted in accordance with the technical regulations.
2 - A bizarre statistic about Meyer Shank Racing: with this Indy 500 victory, the team now has two IndyCar wins in total - and both are Indy 500 victories! Helio Castroneves won the race for the team in 2021, and this year Felix Rosenqvist added another.
0.023 - The gap between race winner Felix Rosenqvist and runner-up David Malukas was just 0.023 seconds at the finish - the closest finish in Indy 500 history! Prior to this race, the record was set in 1992, when Al Unser Jr. finished 0.043 seconds ahead of Scott Goodyear.
0.015 - The gap between third and fifth place was even smaller: just 0.015 seconds separated Scott McLaughlin in third from Marcus Armstrong in fifth! Pato O'Ward finished 0.006 seconds behind McLaughlin, while Armstrong was another 0.009 seconds behind O'Ward.
