While cooler conditions earlier in the day favored drivers running sooner in the first segment, the opposite proved true during Top 12 Qualifying as temperatures began to drop again later in the afternoon. Drivers also had to deal with stronger winds, particularly in Turn 4 where gusts reached Force 4 conditions.
After only qualifying 11th in the opening segment, Palou was the second driver to make his qualifying attempt. His run immediately showed that the defending Indy 500 winner remained a serious contender. Not only was he half a mile per hour faster than during his earlier attempt, his average would have been good enough for fourth in the opening qualifying session.
One after another, drivers failed to improve on Palou’s benchmark, with many suffering significant drop-off between laps. As a result, Palou remained on top of the charts for much of the session. Malukas came very close during his attempt, but ultimately fell short by 0.2 mph.
As the final driver on track, Rosenqvist opened his run with the fastest first lap of the session. While no other driver managed more than one lap above 232 mph, Rosenqvist completed three of his four laps over the 232 mph mark to comfortably secure the fastest run of Top 12 Qualifying.
Joining Rosenqvist in the Firestone Fast 6 are Palou, Malukas, Santino Ferrucci, Pato O'Ward and Alexander Rossi.
