Schedule
The open test for the Indy 500 will take place on Tuesday, April 28 and Wednesday, April 29. Tuesday’s test will be interrupted by a two-hour rookie session, in which Dennis Hauger, Mick Schumacher, Caio Collet and Jacob Abel must work their way up to speed in different phases. Of the rookies, Abel also completed this program last year, but because he failed to qualify for the race, he is still considered a rookie this year.
The rookie session will also be used for veterans who did not compete in any other oval races after last year’s Indy 500, allowing them to gradually get back up to speed in the Refreshers test. The veterans who qualify for this are Jack Harvey, Ed Carpenter, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Katherine Legge and Helio Castroneves. Takuma Sato does not need to complete the refresher test because he tested at Indianapolis last fall.
