Friday Practice in Iowa Canceled Due to Severe Weather; Tornado Narrowly Misses Track

The free practice session for the Synk 275 at Iowa Speedway has been canceled due to severe weather that passed over the track. Heavy thunderstorms moved through the area, followed by an official tornado warning. A tornado was later seen from the track. IndyCar has adjusted Saturday's schedule for this reason.

An hour before the scheduled start of the practice session, the first cars were already being towed into pit lane for a special "high line" practice. By running cars on the high groove, IndyCar hopes to lay down rubber and improve passing opportunities during the race. Just as the session was set to begin, the first raindrops began to fall.

After heavy rainfall, an official warning was issued for potential tornado activity. Around 3:00 PM local time, sirens began blaring around the track to signal a tornado warning. Roughly twenty minutes later, a tornado swept past the track, missing it by only a few miles.

The official tornado warning remains in effect until 8:00 PM local time, which led IndyCar to determine it was not safe to continue with any track activity today.

Updated Time Schedule for Saturday

The practice session has been moved to Saturday at 10:00 AM ET. The qualifying session, originally scheduled for 12:05 PM ET, has now been pushed back to 1:30 PM ET. The Saturday race will still start as planned at 5:20 PM ET.
