Today, OpenWheelWorld.net celebrates a very special milestone: the website is 20 years old! OpenWheelWorld.net was launched on January 10, 2005, originally as ChampCar.nl, and has been known as OpenWheelWorld.net since April 2008. To mark this occasion, we are relaunching the English version of the website!

In 2005, the site was established as ChampCar.nl—a Dutch-language website delivering the latest news about the Champ Car World Series. In 2006 and 2007, the website expanded to include German and English versions, significantly increasing its reach. After the reunification of Champ Car and the Indy Racing League, the site continued under the name ‘OpenWheelWorld.net.’

Over the years, a decline in the number of volunteers led to the closure of the German and English sites, while the Dutch-language website ceased operating as a news site in early 2022. Instead, the site shifted its focus to providing updates on track action, information, and analyses.

In recent years, OpenWheelWorld.net has developed extensive information hubs about IndyCar and the Indy 500. These include a constantly updated entry list for the Indy 500, prize money data (including inflation adjustments).

The site has also introduced two unofficial championships: a team championship and the Nations Cup, based on the systems used by CART and Champ Car. Additionally, the site now includes entrant points standings and offers driver, rookie, and engine championships dating back to 1979!

With a complete archive of race results since 1979 and comprehensive information on the history of the IndyCar Series, teams, and drivers, OpenWheelWorld.net is the go-to site for both new and dedicated IndyCar fans!

As part of its 20th-anniversary celebrations, OpenWheelWorld.net is taking a significant step to make its content more accessible to a broader audience: we are returning with an English-language website featuring nearly identical content to the Dutch version! You might have already seen it, as we've been developing, testing amd filling the English version for over half a year!

Of course, American fans will be the primary focus of the site, but there will also be a secondary focus on fans from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Finally, we want to thank all the volunteers who have contributed to OpenWheelWorld.net over the past 20 years. Regardless of the size of their contribution, every effort is deeply appreciated.

OpenWheelWorld.net is entirely volunteer-run. Due to the current small size of the team, we are urgently seeking new volunteers, especially for writing about track action and analyses. If you’d like to contribute to the website, please get in touch with us!
