Before Prema Racing's arrival in America, the team had already firmly established itself in European formula racing. The team is active across the entire ladder leading to Formula 1: karting, Formula 4, Formula Regional, Formula 3, and Formula 2. In these racing categories, the team has won numerous championships.

Prema was founded in Italy in 1983 by Angelo Rosin and Giorgio Piccolo. Initially, it was an Italian Formula 3 team, but starting in the late 1990s, it began to expand within Italian motorsport. In 2003, the team entered the international stage with the European Formula 3 Championship. From there, it grew steadily, offering more steps on the ladder toward Formula 1.

Adding the entire Formula 1 ladder to Prema’s portfolio didn’t stop the team’s ambitions. In 2022, the team expanded into the FIA World Endurance Championship, competing in the LMP2 class with an Oreca for the first two seasons. By 2024, the team moved up to the Hypercar class, contributing to Lamborghini’s factory program.

The team’s growth ambitions didn’t stop with the sports car program. In 2024, Prema set its sights on the IndyCar Series, marking its first step into the United States. In 2025, the team made its IndyCar Series debut with Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman as its drivers.

Prema initially faced a challenging start to its IndyCar campaign. The drivers struggled with early technical issues, and the team still had to get fully to grips with the Dallara DW12. Even so, the team caused a major surprise when rookie Robert Shwartzman captured pole position for the Indy 500. It wasn’t until the end of the season that results began to improve, with Ilott finishing in the top ten in four of the final five races.

With a solid debut season in the IndyCar Series, the team appeared to have built a strong foundation for a successful IndyCar program. However, financial difficulties have once again cast doubt on its future.
