Annual Indy 500 Pit Stop Competition Ended Early Due to Rain

The annual pit stop competition held during Carb Day for the Indy 500 was ended early after five pit stop battles, because of rain. At the moment the rain began, the No. 76 crew of Rinus VeeKay had set the fastest time, although no official timing was available during the battle won by Josef Newgarden — whose crew won last year — against Scott Dixon.

The pit stop competition immediately began with a major surprise, as the usually flawless crew of Alex Palou made a mistake on the right rear wheel and lost its matchup to the crew of Ryan Hunter-Reay, which is partially using a NASCAR crew for this race.

Josef Newgarden then defeated Scott Dixon, while Marcus Ericsson surprisingly beat the Penske crew of David Malukas. Of the available pit stop times, Rinus VeeKay’s crew was the fastest with a 12.3747-second stop, comfortably defeating its former pit crew — now working with Romain Grosjean.

The final battle before the rain came between the crews of Pato O’Ward and Will Power. However, it turned into a one-sided contest when Power initially failed to get moving from his starting position, giving O’Ward an easy win.

The early cancellation of the pit stop competition is bad news for the crew that would ultimately won the competition. Winning the competition earns a $150,000 prize, which is typically divided among the pit crew members. The crews will still receive compensation, as they prepared their backup cars specifically for this competition.

Results based on the available pit stop times after five battles*:
1. #76 Juncos Hollinger Racing crew (Rinus VeeKay) – 12,375s
2. #31 Arrow McLaren crew (Ryan Hunter-Reay) – 12,989s
3. #28 Andretti Global crew (Marcus Ericsson) – 13,194s
4. #5 Arrow McLaren crew (Pato O’Ward) -13,296s
5. #18 Dale Coyne Racing crew (Romain Grosjean) – 14.055s
6. #12 Team Penske (David Malukas) – 14.203s
7. #10 Chip Ganassi Racing crew (Alex Palou) – 17,656s
8. #26 Andretti Global crew (Will Power) – 24,785s
*No official timing was available for the battle between Dixon and Newgarden.
