The Alabama Indy Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park may have delivered plenty of excitement on Saturday, but Sunday was a bit less spectacular. There were twenty fewer overtakes recorded than last year. However, it produced the fastest IndyCar race ever at this track, while Alex Palou reduced his championship deficit to Kyle Kirkwood to just two points. What else stood out? We analyze the race weekend through a series of numbers!

117.210 - With an average speed of 117.210 mph (188.591 km/h), this was the fastest IndyCar race ever at Barber Motorsports Park.

91 - In qualifying, it was already clear that Honda was the dominant engine at Barber Motorsports Park: five of the six cars in the Firestone Fast 6 were powered by the Japanese manufacturer. In the race, four Hondas and two Chevrolets finished in the top six, with Honda scoring the most points: 91 compared to 72 for Chevrolet. Honda now leads the manufacturers’ championship by 47 points.

68.6127 - The pace of Christian Lundgaard was clearly evident when looking at the fastest laps of the race; the McLaren driver set the fastest lap on lap 19: 1:08.6127, or 68.6127 seconds.

68 - During the race at Barber, 68 overtakes for position were recorded (88 when including passes on lapped traffic). That is significantly fewer than last year, when there were 88 overtakes for position.

41 - Third place for Graham Rahal marked his first podium finish since the Gallagher Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in 2023 – 41 races ago!

38 - This marked Alex Palou’s 16th victory on a natural road course. He has now won 38.1% of all his starts on permanent circuits.

34.33 - As the race at Barber Motorsports Park ran without cautions both this year and last year, the races can be compared well. Notably, this year’s race was 34.33 seconds faster. The winner in both races was the same: Alex Palou.

27.9521 - The pit crew of Josef Newgarden delivered the fastest full service pit stop of the race; on lap 15, his total time from pit entry to pit exit was 27.9521 seconds.

21 - The rookies struggled during the race at Barber. The highest-finishing rookie only managed 21st place. That honor went to Caio Collet, while fellow rookies Dennis Hauger and Mick Schumacher finished 23rd and 24th.

21 - The win at Barber was Alex Palou’s 21st IndyCar victory, moving him up to 22nd on the all-time wins list.

12 - Overtaking proved difficult at Barber Motorsports Park this year, except for one driver: Christian Lundgaard. The Dane passed twelve cars (including lapped traffic) on track, by far the most of anyone. For comparison, Alex Palou, Dennis Hauger, Scott McLaughlin, Rinus VeeKay, Scott Dixon and Louis Foster were tied for second with five overtakes.

11 - Will Power gained the most positions relative to his starting spot. He started 23rd and finished 12th – a gain of eleven places.

10.0694 - A mistake by the #7 McLaren crew of Christian Lundgaard prevented a fight for the win. His pit stop was 10.0694 seconds slower than the average of his previous two stops. Lundgaard ultimately finished thirteen seconds behind race winner Alex Palou after being stuck behind Graham Rahal for multiple laps.

6 - The IndyCar field was highly competitive, with six different teams represented in the top six.

4 - Marcus Armstrong was remarkably consistent in qualifying. He advanced to the Fast 12 in fourth place, qualified fourth for the Firestone Fast 6, and finished fourth again in the Fast 6.

3 - The race featured only three different leaders: Alex Palou (79 laps), Christian Lundgaard (10 laps) and Graham Rahal (1 lap).

2 - Despite finishing ‘only’ fifth, Kyle Kirkwood retains the championship lead, albeit by just two points over Alex Palou.

0 - Race control had an unusually quiet race, with no penalties issued.

0 - Alex Palou and Kyle Kirkwood were the only drivers not to be overtaken at any point during the race at Barber.
