Indy 500 Victory Earns Palou Nearly $3.83 Million in Prize Money

The Indianapolis 500 is an annual opportunity for teams to secure substantial earnings, particularly for the winning team. Alex Palou's victory brought in $3,833,500 (£2,889,396) in prize money, while the total purse distributed across the field amounted to $20,283,000 (£15,276,099)—a new record in the history of the Indy 500.

Palou's earnings are slightly less than what Josef Newgarden received in 2024. As a two-time consecutive winner, Newgarden earned an additional bonus of $440,000 (£331,320).

It's important to note that Palou doesn't receive the full amount personally. Each driver's contract specifies how prize money is divided. Consequently, Chip Ganassi Racing, Palou's team, receives a significant portion of the winnings. This is positive news for the team's staff, who often receive generous bonuses. Ultimately, Palou himself will still take home a seven-figure sum from his victory.

The total prize pool is determined annually based on event revenues, including sponsorships and ticket sales. Distribution is then allocated based on factors such as participation in IndyCar's 'Leader Circle' program, performance in practice sessions, qualifying, the race itself, and other criteria that award prize money.
