It could be said that when Tony George founded the Indy Racing League he had a vision of how open-wheel racing in the United States should be, so when he decided to become a team owner it is only fitting that “vision” followed him. Vision Racing was formed in 2005 when Tony George and his wife Laura purchased the assets of Kelly Racing. In 2006, Patrick Dempsey star of Golden Globe-nominated drama Grey’s Anatomy and race car driver became a co-owner of the team.
In 2009, Vision Racing started as a two car effort, with Ed Carpenter (George’s step-son) and Ryan Hunter-Reay at the wheel. However, Hunter-Reay was evetually farmed out to A.J. Foyt's team, and Vision scaled back to one car.
