Biografie

Ed Jones is een in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten geboren Engelsman die na aardig wat successen in Europa besloot om vanaf 2015 te gaan racen in Amerika bij het team van Carlin in het Indy Lights kampioenschap. Jones liet al snel zien een zeer snelle jongen te zijn door de eerste drie wedstrijden uit zijn Indy Lights carrière te winnen, de titel bleek er echter niet in te zitten en dus moest Jones zich in zijn debuutseizoen tevreden stellen met een derde plaats in de eindstand.

In 2016 kon Jones slechts twee wedstrijden winnen daar waar hij er in 2015 nog drie won, echter ging in dit seizoen de Indy Lights titel wel naar het talent uit Dubai, dit na een spannende strijd met Santiago Urrutia die slechts twee punten achter Jones eindigde.

Na het winnen van de Indy Lights titel kon Ed Jones in 2017 zijn IndyCar debuut maken bij Dale Coyne Racing, het zou een goed seizoen worden voor de Indy Lights kampioen van 2016, Jones werd veertiende in de eindstand en daarmee Rookie Of The Year met een derde plaats behaald tijdens de Indianapolis 500 als beste seizoensresultaat.

Na een iet wat teleurstellend verlopen tweede seizoen voor Jones bij Chip Ganassi Racing ging de voormalige IndyCar Rookie Of The Year in 2019 naast de Indianapolis 500 ook alle permanente- en stratencircuits rijden voor het team van Ed Carpenter Racing. Helaas bleek ook dit niet echt een succes want ondanks dat Jones zich als vierde had weten te kwalificeren voor de Indianapolis 500 en hij zich daarnaast ook nog in de top zes had weten te kwalificeren voor de races op het infield van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway en in de straten van Toronto, zou de voormalig Indy Lights kampioen slechts één top tien resultaat scoren uit dertien wedstrijden met een zesde plaats als het schamele hoogtepunt in wat wederom een moeilijk seizoen voor Jones was.

Na twee teleurstellend verlopen seizoenen waarin zowel Chip Ganassi Racing eind 2018 als Ed Carpenter Racing eind 2019 hadden besloten om de samenwerking met Ed Jones na één jaar al stop te zetten, vond de voormalig Formule 3-coureur voor het seizoen 2020 onderdak in het DTM om in die klasse uit te komen voor het team van Audi Sport Team WRT. De COVID-19 pandemie gooide echter roet in het eten voor de plannen van Jones, de coureur was op het moment van de uitbraak van de pandemie namelijk in Dubai en kon door de reisrestricties die vanwege de pandemie van kracht waren aldaar, niet afreizen naar Europa. Hierdoor ging er uiteindelijk een streep door het gehele race seizoen van de Indy Lights kampioen van 2016 die door de reisrestricties zijn DTM zitje uiteindelijk zag gaan naar Harrison Newey.

In januari 2021 keerde Jones echter weer terug in de autosport en maakte de voormalig Ed Carpenter Racing coureur namens Scuderia Corsa in de GTD klasse zijn debuut in de Rolex 24 uur van Daytona. In diezelfde maand werd tevens aangekondigd dat Jones het aankomende seizoen terug zal keren in de NTT IndyCar Series paddock en wel als rijder bij het team waar het in IndyCar allemaal begon voor de voormalig Indy Lights kampioen, namelijk Dale Coyne Racing.
