    De Colombiaan Carlos Muñoz begint zijn motorsport carriere in 2002 in de karts. Op vijftienjarige leeftijd maakt Muñoz in 2007 zijn debuut in de single-seaters, racend in de Formula TR Pro Series. Hij pakt een podiumplaats van de vier wedstrijden en eindigt het seizoen als achtste. In 2008 rijdt de Colombiaan voor Prema Powerteam in de Italiaanse Formule Renault 2.0 en de Europese Formule Renault 2.0. In de Italiaanse serie pakt in zes van de twaalf races punten en eindigt hij als 16e. In de Eurocup scoort hij echter geen enkel punt met een 13e plek als beste resultaat op de Nürburgring en Estoril.

    In het daaropvolgende jaar rijdt Muñoz voor het team van Epsilon Euskadi in zowel de Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 als de Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup. Hij pakt de achtste plaats in de eindklassering en scoort in tien van de veertien races punten, met een podiumplaats in de tweede race op de Nürburgring als het hoogtepunt. In de West European Cup wordt hij zevende met twee podiumplaatsen. Naast zijn optredens in de FR 2.0 kampioenschappen in 2009 rijdt Muñoz ook nog eens drie wedstrijden in het Europese F3 Open Kampioenschap voor het team van Porteiro Motorsport. Hij wordt elfde overall met een tweede plaats in Spa-Francorchamps als beste resultaat.

    In 2010 rijdt de Colombiaan het hele jaar in de Formule F3 Euro Series, rijdend voor Mücke Motorsport. Met een tweede plaats op Brands Hatch als beste klassering eindigt hij als negende. Ook in 2011 rijdt Muñoz in F3 Euro Series maar nu voor het team van Signature. Ditmaal wordt hij achtste met een derde plek op het Silverstone Circuit als beste resultaat.

    Muñoz maakt een overstap naar de Verenigde Staten in 2012 om te racen in Firestone Indy Lights voor Andretti Autosport. Hij hengelt twee overwinningen binnen. Één op de oval van Auto Club Speedway en één vanaf pole in Edmonton. Daarnaast pakt hij nog drie andere podiumplaatsen en wordt vijfde aan het eind van de rit. In 2013 rijdt hij wederom voor Andretti en kondigt een deal aan om bij Andretti Autosport de Indianapolis 500 te mogen rijden.

    Tijdens de kwalificatie voor de Indianapolis 500 dat jaar eindigt Muñoz als tweede en gedurende de race weet de Colombiaan met de voorhoede mee te komen. Hij rijdt twaalf ronden aan de leiding en eindigt als tweede in de race. Daarmee werd de Colombiaan Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year. In race twee van de 'doubleheader' in Toronto vervangt Carlos Muñoz de geblesseerde Ryan Briscoe bij Panther Racing die in de eerste race dat weekend zijn pols had gebroken. Met maar 12 ronden rijden in de warming-up om te wennen aan de wagen, start de Colombiaan als 24e en eindigt de wedstrijd als zeventiende.

    In 2014 reed Carlos Muñoz zijn eerste voltijd seizoen in IndyCar voor Andretti Autosport, Muñoz zou tot en met 2016 bij het team van Michael Andretti blijven rijden en in deze drie voltijd seizoenen zes podium plaatsen behalen met als hoogtepunt zijn eerste overwinning in de straten van Detroit, Belle Isle in 2015.

    In 2017 reed Carlos Muñoz een jaar bij het team van A.J. Foyt Enterprises, echt een succes werd het niet, de Colombiaan werd slechts zestiende in de eindstand met een zevende plaats in Long Beach als beste resultaat.

    Dit jaar keert Muñoz terug bij het oude nest van Andretti Autosport, al is het ditmaal niet in een voltijd verband, Muñoz heeft vooralsnog 'slechts' een contract voor de Indianapolis 500.
