Biografie

James Jakes begon zijn carrière in het T-Car Kampioenschap in 2002 en in 2003 eindigde hij in die serie als tweede.In 2004 reed de Brit in het British Formula Renault Kampioenschap metTeam AKA. In dit kampioenschap leerde Jakes de kneepjes van het vak, waarbij hij vaak kon strijden voor de overwinning. Dit bracht hem in 2005 een derde positie in the eindklassement. De twee jaar Formula Renault bracht hem ook McLaren Autosport BRDC Award nominatie en ook een BRDC Rising Star status.

Na één race te hebben gereden in 2005, reed Jakes in 2006 het hele seizoen in de British Formula 3 kampioenschap full-time en eindigde als achtste. .
In 2007 stapte hij over naar de Formula 3 Euroseries bij Manor Motorsport en behaalde de vijfde plek in het kampieonschap met een overwinning in Magny-Cours. Na een goed begin in 2008 en overwinning in Pau valt hij helemaal terug naar de dertiende positie.

Vervolgens ging James Jakes rijden in het2008–09 en 2009-10 GP2 Asia Series seizoen bij Super Nova Racing. Hij behaalde tweemaal de derde positie in die twee seizoenen. Jakes tekende bij Manor Motorsport in de GP3 Series in 2010. Ondanks dar hij twee wedstrijden mistte werd hij achtste met drie podiumplaatsen.

In 2011 en 2012 reed Jakes in de IndyCar Series verschillende wedstrijden voor Dale Coyne Racing met een achtste plek als beste resultaat.
In 2013 reed Jakes bij het team van Bobby Rahal en pakte een tweede plaats in Detroit.

In 2015 rijdt James Jakes voor het team van Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
