Na twee tevergeefse pogingen om zich in 1993 en 1995 voor de Indianapolis 500 te kwalificeren, maakte Davey Hamilton in 1996 de overstap naar de nieuw gevormde Indy Racing League. Hier kende hij direct succes zowel in 1997 als 1998 een tweede plaats in het kampioenschap. In 2001 raakte de Amerikaan op de Texas Speedway zwaar gewond en onderging maar liefst 21 operaties. Na een jaar in een rolstoel te hebben gezeten, keerde Hamilton weer terug als commentator voor het IMS Radio Network en begon later gasten de ervaring van hun leven te geven in de IRL tweezitters. Dit smaakte naar meer, waarna Hamilton bijna zes jaar na zijn bijna fatale crash in 2007 zijn rentree in de Indianapolis 500 maakte.
