    Buddy Lazier kan oprecht één van de veteranen van de IndyCar Series paddock worden genoemd. Al in 1989 probeerde de Amerikaan zich voor het eerst te kwalificeren voor de Indianapolis 500, maar blesseerde zich en haalde de race niet. Ook een jaar later haalde hij de race niet door zich niet te kwalificeren en maakte uiteindelijk zijn Indy Car World Series (het latere Champ Car) debuut in Portland, rijdend voor Hemelgarn Racing.

    Na zes oncompetitieve seizoenen maakte Lazier in 1996 de overstap naar de nieuwe Indy Racing League en won – wederom rijdend voor Hemelgarn racing - uit het niets de Indianapolis 500. Vervolgens bleef hij Hemelgarn Racing trouw en reed hij van 1997 t/m 2003 het hele seizoen voor het team. De succesvolle combinatie won zelfs in 2000 met twee overwinningenen het IRL kampioenschap en in 2001 werd Lazier met zelfs vier overwinningen tweede.

    In 2004 had Hemelgarn alleen nog maar financiën voor de Indy 500. Na deze race verliet Lazier het team van Hemelgarn voor avontuurtjes bij Panther, Dreyer & Reinbold en Sam Schmidt Racing, maar uiteindelijk keerde hij in 2008 weer terug bij zijn oude team voor de Indy 500.
    In 2009 wist Lazier zich niet te kwalificeren en Ron Hemelgarn trok zich met zijn team voorgoed terug.

    In 2013 waagde Lazier zich wederom voor een avontuur op Indianapolis en schreef zich dit keer in met zijn eigen team, Lazier Partners Racing. Hij werd 32ste.

    Ook in 2014 ging Buddy Lazier een poging wagen de race voor de tweede keer op zijn naam te schrijven met zijn eigen team, een kans op de overwinning zat er echter bij lange na niet in, de Amerikaan moest na 87 ronden opgeven met een mechanisch probleem.

    Daar waar Lazier in 2014 de start van de Indianapolis 500 nog haalde zat dit er in 2015 helaas niet in, Buddy Lazier deed wat hij kon maar werd nipt verslagen door de in augustus 2016 verongelukte Bryan Clauson voor de 33e en laatste startplaats.

    In 2016 stond Lazier weer aan de start van wat een extra bijzondere Indianapolis 500 was, het was namelijk de honderdste editie van The Greatest Spectacle In Racing. Lazier kende voor de start al problemen maar kwam uiteindelijk toch uit de pitstraat, helaas moest de Indianapolis 500 winnaar van 1996 na honderd ronden alsnog opgeven met mechanisch malheur en werd als dertigste geklasseerd in de wedstrijd.

    In 2017 deed Lazier voor het laatst mee aan de historische wedstrijd op de befaamde 2,5-mijl lange oval. Helaas zou de voormalig IndyCar kampioen wederom de eindstreep niet halen nadat Buddy Lazier zijn wagen in de muur zette in ronde 118 van de wedstrijd.
