    Net als de meeste Europese coureurs werkte Alex Lloyd in de beginfase van zijn carrière hard om in de Formule 1 te komen. Door achter Lewis Hamilton in 2003 als tweede te eindigen in het Britse Formule Renault kampioenschap viel de Engelsman op en won de BRCD McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year award. Dankzij deze prijs mocht hij in 2004 de McLaren Formule 1 wagen testen en reed enkele Euro Formule 3000 races, waarin hij één zege en drie pole scoorde. Door geldgebrek kon hij in 2005 slechts enkele races rijden in verschillende klassen, waarna hij 2006 de overstap naar de VS maakte om in de Indy Pro Series te gaan racen. In deze klasse won hij een jaar later het kampioenschap, waarna hij door Ganassi Racing werd vastgelegd. Het team kon hem in 2008 alleen een stoeltje voor de Indy 500 aanbieden, waarna in 2009 hetzelfde gebeurde.
