    Vitor Meira maakte in 2002 zijn debuut in de IRL voor Menard. Tijdens dat seizoen reed hij de laatste vier races en sloot de laatste race verrassend als derde af, nadat hij de race vanaf pole was gestart. Na een matig seizoen voor Menard tekende hij voor het 2004 seizoen een contract met Rahal-Letterman Racing en scoorde in de twee jaar die volgenden zes podiumfinishes. Aan het eind van het 2005 seizoen verloor het team zijn sponsoring, waardoor de carrière van Meira tot een einde leek te komen. Een lastminute deal Panther Racing voor het 2006 seizoen bracht daar verandering in, waarna een erg sterk seizoen volgde, waarin hij in zes van de veertien races op het podium eindigde en aan het eind van het seizoen als vijfde in het kampioenschap werd geklasseerd. Het 2007 seizoen verliep erg frustrerend, waarin hij geen enkele podiumfinish scoorde en niet verder kwam dan de twaalfde positie in het kampioenschap. Ondanks dat de Meira al dertien keer op het podium eindigde, wacht de Braziliaan nog steeds op zijn eerste raceoverwinning.
