Al op jonge leeftijd maakte Dan Wheldon de overstap naar de Amerikaanse autosport, waar hij de typische Amerikaanse weg naar de top volgde; Formule Ford 2000, Toyota Atlantic en de Indy Lights. In 2002 mocht hij voor Panther Racing zijn debuut in de IRL maken tijdens de laatste twee races van het seizoen. Tijdens deze races maakte hij zoveel indruk dat hem voor 2003 een Andretti-Green contract werd aangeboden. In 2005 slaagde hij er in om voor dit team de titel te winnen, waarna hij overstapte naar Ganassi Racing. In zijn eerste jaar voor Ganassi eindigde hij met Sam Hornish jr op de eerste plaats qua punten, maar doordat hij minder overwinningen had gescoord liep hij de titel mis. Tijdens de twee jaren die nog bij Ganassi volgden bleek hij vaak het tempo van teamgenoot Scott Dixon niet te kunnen volgen, waarna hij door Dario Frachitti werd vervangen. Kort daarna werd bekend dat de Engelsman terug zou keren naar het team waar het allemaal begon: Panther Racing.
