    Ondanks dat Ernesto Viso dit jaar voor het eerst in de IndyCar Series rijdt, is hij niet vreemd met de Amerikaanse autosport cultuur. In 2001 begon hij zijn autosportcarrière in de Amerikaanse Barber Formula Dodge East. Na dit jaar koos de Venezolaan er voor om zijn carriere aan de andere zijde van de oceaan voort te zetten en kwam via verschillende Formule Renault kampioenschappen en het Brits Formule 3 kampioenschap in 2004 halverwege het seizoen in de Formule 3000 (het huidige GP2 Series) terecht. In deze serie zou hij tot 2007 blijven rijden en scoorde in die vier jaar twee overwinningen. In 2008 keerde hij de GP2 Series eindelijk de rug toe om in Champ Car te gaan rijden. In december 2007 had hij al succesvol voor Minardi Team USA getest en testte ook voor het team tijdens de open test op Sebring. Na de hereniging van de Champ Car World Series en de IndyCar Series werd bekend dat het team onder leiding van Keith Wiggins door zou gaan, met Viso als coureur.
