James Hinchcliffe was een voormalig IndyCar-coureur, die van 2011 tot 2021 actief was in de raceklasse. Gedurende elf seizoenen reed de Canadees 161 races, behaalde hij 18 podiumplaatsen en won hij zes races. Tegenwoordig werkt hij als commentator bij zowel IndyCar- als Formule 1-races.

Beginjaren in de Autosport

Via het kampioenschap in het TKC Junior Rotax Class Karting Championship maakte Hinchcliffe in 2003 zijn autosportdebuut in de F2000 Series, waar hij direct als derde eindigde. Een jaar later werd de Canadees uitgeroepen tot Rookie of the Year in de Amerikaanse Formula BMW Series en eindigde hij in 2005 als derde in de Star Mazda Series. Dit resultaat leverde hem een stoeltje op bij het befaamde Forsythe Racing in de Champ Car Atlantics, waar hij één race wist te winnen.

Hoewel Hinchcliffe in drie jaar Atlantics slechts twee overwinningen behaalde, eindigde hij door consistent te scoren in zowel 2007 als 2008 als vierde in het kampioenschap.

Na drie jaar in de Atlantics stapte Hinchcliffe over naar de Firestone Indy Lights. In 2010 vocht hij in deze klasse mee om het kampioenschap, maar moest hij genoegen nemen met een tweede plaats.

Debuut in IndyCar bij Newman/Haas Racing

Dit sterke resultaat opende de deur naar de IndyCar Series, waar hij in 2011 zijn debuutseizoen reed voor Newman/Haas Racing. Hinchcliffe maakte meteen indruk door in zijn tweede race als vierde te finishen.

Overstap naar Andretti Autosport

Het succesvolle debuutseizoen kreeg in 2012 een vervolg bij Andretti Autosport. Hinchcliffe kende een goed seizoen, maar zakte in het tweede gedeelte van het jaar wat terug. In 2013 beleefde hij een topjaar door meteen de openingsrace van het seizoen te winnen, wat zijn eerste IndyCar-overwinning werd. Later dat jaar volgden nog twee overwinningen, maar door enkele uitvalbeurten zakte hij in de eindstand naar de achtste plaats, net als in 2012.

In 2014 bleef het succes uit. Hinchcliffe eindigde slechts als twaalfde in het kampioenschap, met een derde plaats als hoogtepunt van het seizoen. Na dit teleurstellende jaar moest hij vertrekken bij Andretti Autosport.

Zwaar ongelukt bij Schmidt Peterson Motorsports

Voor het seizoen 2015 vond Hinchcliffe onderdak bij Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Hij begon sterk met een overwinning op een nat NOLA Motorsports Park. Het seizoen nam echter een dramatische wending toen hij tijdens een training voor de Indianapolis 500 een zwaar ongeluk kreeg. Een onderdeel van zijn wagen brak af, waardoor hij frontaal de muur inreed. Onderdelen doorboorden de voorkant van de auto en verwondden Hinchcliffe ernstig. Dankzij het snelle en professionele optreden van het veiligheidsteam kon ernstig bloedverlies worden voorkomen.

Hoewel hij volledig zou herstellen, kwam Hinchcliffe de rest van het seizoen niet meer in actie. Conor Daly en Ryan Briscoe namen zijn plaats in.

Terugkeer met pole position in Indianapolis

In 2016 keerde Hinchcliffe terug in de cockpit en verraste hij iedereen door pole position te pakken voor de 100e editie van de Indianapolis 500. Hij eindigde de race als zevende en werd dertiende in het kampioenschap, met een tweede plaats op de Texas Motor Speedway als beste resultaat.

In 2017 maakte Hinchcliffe zijn comeback compleet met een overwinning op het stratencircuit van Long Beach. Helaas behaalde hij daarna geen noemenswaardige resultaten en eindigde hij wederom als dertiende in de eindstand. Het seizoen 2018 was er een van gemengde gevoelens: Hinchcliffe kwalificeerde zich niet voor de Indianapolis 500, maar won later wel de race op Iowa Speedway.

Einde bij Arrow McLaren SP

In 2019 bleef Hinchcliffe racen voor het team van Sam Schmidt en Ric Peterson, dat inmiddels was omgedoopt tot Arrow McLaren SP. Na afloop van het seizoen werd hij echter aan de kant gezet toen het team overstapte naar Chevrolet-motoren.

Laatste Seizoenen in de IndyCar Series

In 2020 reed Hinchcliffe een beperkt programma van zes races bij Andretti Autosport. In 2021 keerde hij voltijds terug bij Andretti, maar ondanks het sterke materiaal beleefde hij een teleurstellend seizoen. Hij finishte slechts één keer in de top tien: een derde plaats in Nashville.

Overgang naar Commentator

Na het tegenvallende seizoen in 2021 maakte Hinchcliffe bekend te stoppen als IndyCar-coureur. Hij bleef echter actief binnen de sport, nu als commentator voor NBC Sports. Later combineerde hij deze rol met die van rijderspecialist bij de Formule 1.
