Voordat Tom Blomqvist in 2023 zijn IndyCar debuut maakte, had de coureur al een uitgebreide cv opgebouwd. Zo won hij in 2010 het Engelse Formule Renault kampioenschap, finishte in 2014 - voor Max Verstappen - als derde in het Europese Formule 3 kampioenschap, voordat hij de overstap maakte naar gesloten wagens. Van 2015 tot 2017 reed Blomqvist in de DTM, keerde met Formule e terug naar open racewagens en kwam in de sportscars terecht.
Na in het IMSA Sports Car Championship voor Rahal Letterman Lanigan te hebben gereden, maakte hij in 2022 de overstap naar Meyer Shank Racing en won hiermee dat jaar het kampioenschap. In 2023 eindige hij voor het team als derde en mocht tevens drie IndyCar races rijden. Dit bleek een opstap te zijn naar een fulltime IndyCar contract in 2024.
