Mario Andretti is een Amerikaanse coureur, met een rijke geschiedenis in de autosport. De in Italië geboren Amerikaan won in 1965, 1966, 1969 en 1984 het Indy Car kampioenschap en in 1969 zijn enige Indianapolis 500 overwinning.
Andretti drukte naast de Indy Car wereld, ook zijn stempel op andere raceklassen. Zo won hij in 1967 de Daytona 500 (NASCAR), in 1978 het Formule 1-kampioenschap en in 1995 de 24 uur van Le Mans.
De indrukwekkende Indy Car carrière duurde van 1964 tot zijn pensioen in 1994. Als vervanger van de geblesseerde Tony Kanaan nam Andretti in 2003 nog deel aan de trainingen van de Indy 500. Dit avontuur eindigde in een harde klap toen de op dat moment 63-jarige coureur over onderdelen op het circuit reed en met zijn wagen opsteeg.
