Colton Herta

Colton Herta is een Amerikaanse IndyCar, welke al op jonge leeftijd wist wat hij wilde: autocoureur worden. Niet verrassend, want de voormalig Indy Lights-coureur is de zoon van ex-IndyCar-coureur Bryan Herta, die momenteel voor de Indianapolis 500 een bolide inzet voor Marco Andretti bij het team van Andretti/Herta Autosport with Marco Andretti. De zoon van Bryan Herta kwam in 2017 en 2018 in actie binnen het Indy Lights-kampioenschap voor Andretti Steinbrenner Racing.

Ondanks dat Herta de titel zowel in 2017 als 2018 misliep in deze klasse, liet de Amerikaan wel zien over aanzienlijk talent te beschikken. In zijn twee seizoenen als Indy Lights-coureur behaalde hij zes overwinningen, waarvan vier achter elkaar in het seizoen 2018. Na in 2017 het kampioenschap als derde te hebben afgesloten, werd Colton Herta in 2018 vice-kampioen achter Patricio O'Ward.

IndyCar-debuut in 2018 bij Harding Racing

Op 16 september 2018 maakte Herta zijn IndyCar-debuut bij het team van Harding Racing op Sonoma Raceway. In 2019 maakte de zoon van Bryan Herta zijn voltijdse NTT IndyCar Series-debuut bij hetzelfde team, dat vanaf dat moment verderging onder de naam Harding Steinbrenner Racing. Herta maakte een sterke indruk, maar miste net de Rookie of the Year-titel. Hij sloot zijn eerste NTT IndyCar Series-seizoen af als zevende, met drie pole positions en twee overwinningen achter zijn naam.

Overstap naar Andretti Autosport

In 2020 was Herta opnieuw actief in dezelfde bolide als het jaar ervoor, maar dit keer niet meer bij Harding Steinbrenner Racing met technische ondersteuning van Andretti Autosport. Na zijn indrukwekkende debuutseizoen in 2019 maakte de jonge Amerikaan vanaf 2020 volledig deel uit van het team van Michael Andretti. Herta eindigde dat jaar op een derde plaats in het eindklassement. In 2021 volgde een vijfde plaats, met maar liefst drie overwinningen, en Herta leek een aanstormend talent.

Moeilijke jaren in 2022 en 2023

De verwachtingen rondom Herta vertroebelden echter in de jaren daarna. Hoewel hij in 2022 nog één overwinning behaalde, zakte hij langzaam weg in het kampioenschap en eindigde hij dat jaar slechts als tiende. In 2023 ging het niet beter: Herta behaalde geen enkele overwinning en eindigde opnieuw als tiende in het kampioenschap.

Heropstanding in 2024

Na twee moeizame seizoenen in 2022 en 2023, maakte Herta in 2024 weer een duidelijke stap vooruit. Door constant te presteren – Herta finishte slechts vier keer buiten de top tien – en twee overwinningen te boeken, sloot hij het seizoen af op een mooie tweede plaats in het kampioenschap.

De opleving bleek echter van korte duur: een jaar later greep Herta naast de overwinningen en behaalde hij slechts twee derde plaatsen als beste resultaat.

Focus op een overstap naar de Formule 1

Met een zevende plaats in het kampioenschap van 2025 scoorde hij onvoldoende punten voor een superlicentie om in de Formule 1 te debuteren, wat wel zijn doel was. Daarom besloot Herta om na dit seizoen de IndyCar Series te verlaten voor een test- en reserverol bij het Cadillac Formule 1-team, dat net als Andretti Global deel uitmaakt van TWG Motorsports.
