Na successen in de Formule 3 en een jaar als testcoureur voor BAR Honda te hebben gereden, reed Darren Manning in 2002 in ASCAR, de Europese versie van NASCAR. Dankzij deze oval ervaring mocht hij tijdens de Champ Car race op het Engelse Rockingham als enige Engelse coureur in het veld zijn Champ Car debuut maken voor het door Dale Coyne Racing gerunde Team St. George. Door een verrassend sterk optreden wist hij zich te verzekeren van een fulltime stoeltje bij Walker Racing voor 2003, waarvoor hij één podiumfinish scoorde. Voor 2004 werd hem een contract aangeboden om voor Ganassi Racing in de IRL te racen, waarna hij de overstap naar Champ Car’s tegenhanger maakte. Een moeilijk seizoen volgde, welke hij slechts als elfde afsloot. Toen hij halverwege het 2005 seizoen weinig progressie liet zien werd zijn contract ontbonden. Na een aantal A1GP races te hebben gereden bood AJ Foyt Racing Manning in 2007 de kans om terug naar de IRL te keren.
