Biografie

Robert Wickens is een coureur die van vele markten thuis is als het aankomt op ervaring met verschillende soorten race wagens. Wickens heeft in verscheidene opstapklassen meerdere wedstrijden weten te winnen en won in 2006 de Formula BMW USA titel, vijf jaar later zou de Canadees wederom een kampioenschap winnen, namelijk de Formule Renault 3.5 Series namens Carlin Motorsport. Van 2012 tot en met 2017 was Wickens actief in het DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) voor Mercedes.

Nadat Mikhail Aleshin de Verenigde Staten niet in mocht in verband met de problemen die de Rus had met zijn visa tijdens het race weekend op Road America werd Robert Wickens, tevens een goede vriend van James Hinchcliffe, gevraagd door Schmidt Peterson Motorsports om in te vallen voor Aleshin zolang dit nodig was. Voor de kwalificatie zou Mikhail Aleshin alweer terug achter het stuur kruipen maar de ervaring in een open wheeler na jaren in toerwagens te hebben gereden deed de Canadees goed en zou achteraf pas het begin zijn van een carrière in de Verizon IndyCar Series.

In 2018 maakt Robert Wickens dan ook zijn debuut bij Schmidt Peterson Motorsports waar hij de #6 bolide voor zal besturen, Wickens is dit jaar de teamgenoot van zijn goede Canadese vriend James Hinchcliffe.
