    Gil de Ferran is een Braziliaanse Indy Car coureur en tweevoudig kampioen (2000 en 2001), terwijl hij ook de Indy 500 van 2003 wist te winnen.

    Na de Europese autosportladder te hebben doorlopen, met een Britse Formule 3 titel en een derde plaats in de Formule 3000, maakte De Ferran in 1995 de overstap naar de Amerikaanse autosport. Met Hall/VDS Racing kende de Braziliaan een sterke ontwikkeling mee, met als hoogtepunt de laatste twee races: een tweede plaats in Vancouver en zijn eerste overwinning op Laguna Seca. Hiermee won hij de Rookie of the Year titel voor Christian Fittipaldi.

    In 1997 maakte De Ferran de overstap naar Walker Racing en finishte zelfs als tweede in het kampioenschap. Twee matiger jaren volgden, maar dit stond niet in de weg dat hij in 2000 de overstap naar Team Penske kon maken. Door constant te blijven scoren, wist hij vervolgens zowel in 2000 als 2001 het CART kampioenschap te winnen.

    Samen met Penske maakte De Ferran in 2002 de overstap naar de rivaliserende Indy Racing League. Hier was de coureur direct competitief en eindigde als derde in het kampioenschap. Een jaar later pakte hij zijn eerste en uiteindelijk enige Indy 500 overwinning.

    Ondanks dat De Ferran één race miste als gevolg van een blessure, eindigde hij als tweede in het kampioenschap. Met twee titels, een Indy 500 overwinning en een zege in zijn slotrace was dit voor De Ferran het moment om met pensioen te gaan als coureur.

    Na zijn carrière als coureur, maakte De Ferran de overstap naar de Formule 1 als sportief directeur van BAR-Honda – een functie die hij van 2005 tot 2007 bekleedde. In 2010 keerde hij terug in IndyCar als mede-teambaas van de Ferran Dragon Racing, dat uiteindelijk na één jaar alweer stopte. Later zat De Ferran in de adviescommissie rondom de introductie van de in 2012 te introduceren nieuwe wagen.

    De Ferran overleed op 29 december 2023 aan een hartstilstand. Hij werd slechts 56 jaar oud.
