Jacob Abel is an American driver who will compete in his first IndyCar Series season in 2025 for Dale Coyne Racing.
Road to the IndyCar Series
After his time in karting, Abel made his motorsport debut in 2017, driving for his father's team – Abel Motorsports – in the U.S. Formula 4 Championship. Thanks to this family-run team, the American was able to gain significant racing mileage in his early years. In 2018, he combined Formula 4 and Formula 3 with a few races in USF2000, and in 2019, he competed in both Formula 3 and Indy Pro 2000.
On his road to the IndyCar Series, Abel demonstrated that he might not possess the greatest natural talent but was capable of learning and improving significantly. He competed in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship for three seasons, ultimately achieving multiple podium finishes.
Abel showed similar progress in the Indy NXT Championship, where he also competed for three years. In his first season, he primarily secured top-ten finishes. His second season included four podiums, and in his third and final year, he finished on the podium in ten of the fourteen races, including three victories. A second-place finish in the championship convinced him to make the step to the highest level of American open-wheel racing: the IndyCar Series.
IndyCar Series Debut
For the 2025 season, Jacob Abel has signed a contract with Dale Coyne Racing to make his debut in the IndyCar Series.
