Katherine Legge
Date of birth: July 12 1980
Nationality: United Kingdom
First race: Long Beach 2006
Katherine Legge is an English IndyCar driver who made her debut in 2006. Since then, she competed in the series during three periods: in 2006 and 2007, in 2012 and 2013, and again in 2023 and 2024. Her best finish to date was a sixth place, achieved in Milwaukee in 2006 and in Las Vegas in 2007.

Early Career

Legge experienced moderate success in her home country; in the British Formula Ford Championship, she earned a pole position and a lap record but advanced no further. In her first year in the United States, the Brit performed much better, scoring several top-five results in the North American Formula Renault series.

Breakthrough in the Atlantic Series and Champ Car Debut

Despite her modest resume, Champ Car team owner Kevin Kalkhoven was impressed by Legge's driving abilities and determination. He offered her a seat in the Atlantic Series. This proved to be a great decision, as she won her very first race in the series. Two more wins followed, and she finished third in the championship.

After thorough evaluation, she made her debut in the Champ Car World Series in 2006. Driving for PKV Racing in 2006 and Dale Coyne Racing in 2007, she showed mixed results. Her best performances were two sixth-place finishes: in Milwaukee (2006) and Las Vegas (2007).

A New Start in Europe, but also a Return to America

It became clear to Legge that her career in America had stalled, so she decided to return to Europe. She secured a seat with Audi in the German DTM. However, she was provided with outdated equipment, which prevented her from making an impression. After three disappointing years, Legge decided she would do whatever it took to return to America.

The Brit worked for a year to secure the necessary sponsorship budget. This allowed her to make her return to American open-wheel racing in 2012. Driving for Dragon Racing, Legge focused solely on oval races after parting ways with the weak Lotus engine. Her best result was a ninth-place finish in Fontana.

Return to the IndyCar Series in 2023

After a ten-year absence, Legge returned to the IndyCar Series in 2023. She competed in the Indianapolis 500 for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Although she was faster than all her teammates in qualifying, the race did not go as planned: she spun during a pit stop on lap 41, hit the wall, and had to retire from the race early.

Her return to the Indy 500 left her wanting more, leading her to compete in the race again in 2024. Driving for Dale Coyne Racing, she qualified in 31st position, securing a spot in the race – something her teammate Nolan Siegel was unable to achieve. Unfortunately, her race ended even earlier than the previous year: on lap 22, her Honda engine began smoking, forcing her to retire the car in the pits.

Later in the season, Legge competed in six additional races. Her best result was a fifteenth-place finish at the Milwaukee Mile.
