“It was probably the most mixed up race that I have ever been in,” said the Australian, who was on his return from a broken back, suffered at Sonoma last August. “But, it created an opportunity for me to come back through the field and end up winning the race. The improvements that they did to the track last night were like night and day. Not a problem at all going down the frontstraight. I think it is just a really good day for racing. If you were fast you could pass, because there is such a good track layout here. I'm pretty sure it was an exciting race for the fans.”
Teammates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves were not as fortunate, however. Both were collected in the opening lap chaos, and each was forced to pit for repairs. In fact, Briscoe was in contention for the win at race’s end, overtaking Ryan Hunter-Ready for the lead in the closing minutes. However, one of the many bumps on the street circuit bit him as he entered turn four, and he nosed the car into the tire barrier. Briscoe ended the day in 14th.
Castroneves enjoyed a quiet, but solid comeback, bringing his car home ninth.
